Whatever your preferred accent may be—the bold centerpiece, the subtle contrast, the peripheral flourish—Hayneedle décor will translate it into perfection!

Even well-furnished rooms can be sparse around the edges. Create a richer and more colorful backdrop for your favorite furniture with home décor accessories. Our eclectic selection offers pieces of exceptional interest and quality, guaranteed to stimulate discussion—and your mind and senses, too. Weave a visual and sonic tapestry throughout your home with our unique lamps, intricate area rugs, decorative pillows, wall decor, and more.

Every home has its hidden treasures—and we don’t mean all that change buried beneath the sofa cushions. Give your valuables and treasured possessions the protection they deserve with storage and organization furniture. Heirloom-quality cedar chests are a great idea! We also cater to collectors and connoisseurs, with climate-controlled wine coolers and wine storage furniture and beautiful jewelry armoires and boxes.

Top to bottom or bottom to top? It’s a wonder where to begin when there are so many rugs and lighting choices. Whether you start redecorating at floor or ceiling, it’s sure to be a happy ending when there are home accents in the story.

Rugs: Indoor, Outdoor, and In-between

When it comes to home décor, rugs pull everything together. They define space. They add texture. They provide color and comfort underfoot. But with thousands of rugs to choose from, how do you know which rug is right for you? Like any other piece of décor, it’s best to trust your instincts when choosing color and style. However, don’t forget that the function and location of the rug should influence your decision too.

You’ve probably heard indoor rugs commonly referred to as area rugs. A broad term used to describe rugs of various shapes and sizes, area rugs include a range of floor coverings from 9 x 12 foot rectangles big enough to cover an entire room to a 4-foot round rug that’s perfect for the edge of the bed. Don’t forget that rugs can be used on carpet too. Placing a long, narrow runner in a carpeted hallway is a smart way to prolong the life of your carpet. Plus, adding depth and texture to a space is always a win-win.

Like area rugs, outdoor rugs come in various shapes and sizes. The main difference, however, is that these rugs are often constructed of more durable, weather-resistant material, such as polypropylene. The same goes for door mats. Whether you place them inside or outside your door, hardy materials like coir (coconut fiber) help door mats hold up against the wear and tear of high traffic areas.

Patio Furniture

Have a seat outside, on something delightful from our amazing variety of outdoor furniture. Relax, breathe it all in, and look uber stylish while you do. All the patio chairs and benches on this site are made for comfort while you’re in them, and for good looks while you’re not. Lawn chairs and outdoor wicker furniture are low-fuss and weather-loving, with fade-free, on-trend fabrics that are washable and stain-resistant. You’re supposed to be relaxing, not maintaining.

Start by plopping yourself into a classic Adirondack chair or an irresistible hammock, and feel time slow down. Friends coming over? Our outdoor bar stools, benches, patio tables and picnic tables are made for conversation. If you’d rather face the sun than each other, rest your bones toes up in an outdoor chaise lounge. Too much sun? Duck under one of our brilliant patio umbrellas rather than go inside, and page through a magazine or novel lulled by the tic-toc of an outdoor rocking chair.

Here’s the best kind of swing shift: Hanging porch swings in classic wood or new sun-proof poly. They come with hanging hardware and hooks, ready to sway your mood. Or if that’s not how you hang, nuzzle into a charming, old-fashioned outdoor glider that lulls away your tension.

At hayneedle.com you’ll find everything home, including the latest design trends in patio furniture. So don’t just stand there outside… have a seat.

Patio Conversation Sets, Enjoy Your Backyard with a Stylish Patio Conversation Set

A patio conversation set works as a multi-purpose outdoor furniture set. Friends and family can come together in the backyard or garden to eat, share some drinks, relax, play games or just chat. Unlike a formal patio dining set, the conversation set is designed more for comfort and sectional seating. Just like its name suggests, the patio conversation set is all about socializing.

Can I use a conversation patio set for dining?

Though dining isn’t the main purpose of a conversation set, most tables have some space for plates or at least a few drinks. At best, these are great for informal dining or cocktail parties, because many of these outdoor tables also feature a little fire pit, or they’re upholstered like ottomans instead of plate-holders. Of course, with the right combination of seating and surfaces, dinner is possible anywhere!

Realted: Benefits of Choosing Multi-functional Patio Furniture

What style can I create with patio conversation sets?

Mid-century modern patio furniture is very popular, featuring clean lines and minimalism with just a touch of luxury. White and neutral colors are most commonly associated with mid-century furniture. Craftsman design, on the other hand, also called Mission style, features wooden panels whose grains are accentuated with typically reddish-brown varnish. For a more relaxed and casual option, take a look at rustic-style conversation sets made with thin strips of teak, aluminum, or woven fibers.

Can large groups fit on a conversation set?

Since conversations patio sets are often pieced together with sectional sofas, benches and cube seating, there’s a lot of flexibility in terms of how many people can gather together at one time. Cozy 5 piece sets can comfortably accommodate 4 people, while larger 6 piece sets with three or four sectional sofas can fit up to 10 people. There’s no limit, so long as the outdoor space is large enough to accommodate all of the inviting seats. Also, given the mobile nature of pieces in a conversation set, it is always possible to scale the area down or up as needed. Move a few sofa sections away to create a romantic outdoor spot; or bring one out from storage to make room for a big party.

What materials are best for outdoor furniture sets?

Any upholstered lounge furniture such as seats and ottomans should be manufactured with a specially-woven fabric that can withstand sun, rain, and a few spills without falling to pieces. As for the structure of the furniture, it matters mostly what sort of climate it will be subjected to. A humid climate is very rough on metal structure, while direct sunlight is not ideal for plastics. For places where it may rain look for resin wicker patio sets and natural fibers. In dry climates, aluminum and wrought iron patio sets are better options.

Conversation sets make it easy to relax with loved ones while getting fresh air. Use these helpful tips to decide on a set that you love.

Patio Dining Sets, How to Choose a Patio Dining Set

To make your outdoor dining space feel truly 5-star, you’ll need to start with the perfect patio dining table and chairs. As the centerpiece of your dining space and home to some of your most special meals and memories, the dining set you choose should be stylish, durable, and inviting. We’re here to answer your questions about choosing a patio dining set, so you can create a space that looks and feels amazing.

What size table do I need for my patio dining set?

Most patio dining sets are designed to accommodate between two and eight people, with a recommended minimum of 24 inches of space per guest. Use this rule of thumb to determine which size you’ll need.

How many pieces do I need in my outdoor dining set?

When shopping for a full dining set, remember that the number of pieces in the set reflects the number of chairs PLUS the table. So for a patio table that seats four, look for a 5-piece set. For a group of eight, choose a 9-piece patio dining set.

How tall should my patio dining set be?

Traditional dining table heights fall between 28 and 30 inches. Depending on your preferences and the layout of your deck, yard, or patio, you may find that a balcony- or bar-height dining set, measuring between 34 and 36 inches, is right for your space.

Which materials are ideal for an outdoor dining set?

When choosing patio furniture, durability and convenience are two of the most important factors. To select the best material for your patio dining set, consider your local climate. Do you experience a lot of rain, snow, or hail? Is your patio exposed to lots of sun? Do you live in a particularly windy region?

You should also consider the amount of maintenance each material requires. If you keep a busy schedule and can’t commit much time to cleaning and caring for your patio furniture, choose a low-maintenance material such as powdered aluminum or recycled plastic.

Resin Wicker, or all-weather wicker, is a long-lasting, weather-resistant synthetic fiber weave wrapped over a metal frame. Wicker patio dining sets are known for their convenience, requiring minimal care, as well as their superior durability in rainy, humid, and ultra-sunny climates.

Aluminum, prized for its strong-yet-lightweight construction and weatherproof powder coating, aluminum is one of the most popular outdoor materials available. Aluminum patio dining furniture is sturdy enough to withstand wind and weather, but still easy to arrange and store thanks to its light weight.

Wood, while they require a bit more maintenance than resin wicker or aluminum pieces, wooden outdoor dining sets are still some of the most sought-after patio products. This is thanks to wood’s natural beauty and exceptional durability when properly cared for. Teak patio dining furniture is especially renowned for its durability and performance.

Wrought Iron, heavier than aluminum and prized for its wind resistance and strength, wrought iron outdoor dining furniture is known for its sturdiness as well as its distinctive appearance. Natural wrought iron is more vulnerable to moisture than other outdoor materials, but weather-resistant finishes can seal out the elements and prevent rusting.

Which dining table shape is best for my patio set?

The shape of your patio dining table will depend on the size and layout of your space, as well as how many people you plan to host.

Round: If mealtime in your home involves plenty of conversation, consider a round dining table where everyone can see one another.

Oval: Oval dining tables boast the same smooth, curvy lines as round tables, but their elongated designs allow them to accommodate more people with a smaller footprint

Rectangular: Like oval tables, rectangular dining tables can accommodate larger groups of people in a space-saving design

Square: Square dining tables are another great option for facilitating conversation. Each diner gets their own side of the table, and can easily see everyone else

When choosing outdoor dining furniture, look for pieces in the shapes, styles, and materials that best suit your lifestyle. If you keep these important factors in mind while shopping, you’re sure to find the perfect patio dining set.

Hammocks, Finding Your Ideal Hammock

We love all the ways a hammock makes it easy-breezy to unwind outdoors. All that rejuvenation starts with finding the right hammock for your needs. As you start your search for your perfect hammock, you might have a few questions about how to make the right choice. We’re here to help answer those questions so you can find the design that looks and feels best.

What materials and types can I choose from?

Hammocks come in a wide range of materials and designs to help you get the look and comfort level you prefer. Start your search by choosing the design that appeals most to you. Popular options include:

Rope hammocks, which are loosely woven from thick natural-fiber or polyester cords. This style is breathable to keep you cool, and it doesn’t have much structure. That means it’s great for napping and lounging.

Woven hammocks, which are crafted from lightweight fabric. These offer more support than rope designs, but they’re still loose — sort of like cocoons. Woven hammocks often come in bright, cheerful colors that reflect their South American origins. These are some of the most comfortable hammocks to sleep in.

Quilted hammocks, which are highly supportive and more structured than the other options. These designs are crafted much like traditional quilts; they have solid fabric fronts and backings with batting inside that creates cushioning between the outer fabric layers. Quilted hammocks are the least breathable and flexible of the types, and they work well on specially sized hammock stands because they don’t stretch much.

How can I hang my hammock?

One of the great things about hammocks is that you can set them up almost anywhere, from your porch to your lakeside boat dock. Think about where you plan to set up your hammock, and plan to purchase extra hardware or a stand to accommodate it. Common installation options include:

Hammock stands, which are freestanding structures that support your hammock at both ends. You can set them up on any flat surface, and they’re commonly made of metal or wood. Metal is lightweight and easier to move, while wood is a more decorative and permanent choice.

Tree or post mounting, which both require special hardware. You can choose straps with hooks, which simply wrap around the trees or posts and fasten directly to your hammock. Or, you can drill into the trees or posts and install screws, chains, and S hooks to hang your hammock. Straps are the most portable option, letting you set up your hammock anywhere there are well-spaced trees or posts (a distance that’s 18–24 in. longer than the length of your hammock).

What are spreader bars?

Hammocks are available with and without spreader bars. These rods or wood slats run along both ends of your hammock to hold the fabric taut. They often have holes drilled in them that the hammock’s end ropes pass through, making the spreader bar a permanent addition. Spreader-bar hammocks work well with hammock stands. Because they keep the fabric tighter, they’re common on quilted hammocks. They can also provide more structure to rope designs.

If you plan to mainly use your hammock for sunbathing, reading, or lounging with another person, spreader bars can provide the support you’re looking for. They’re not as ideal for a hammock you want to nap in because they eliminate the cocoon effect of looser fabrics.

Hammocks provide an endlessly comfortable way to unwind in the fresh air. Keep this helpful information and our hammock buying guide in mind as you shop, and you’re sure to find the hammock that looks great and helps you relax.

Adirondack Chairs, Which Adirondack Chair Is Right for You?

Timeless, comfortable, and rustic — Adirondack chairs can transport you to a lakeside cabin or a seaside village just with their stylish curves alone. If you’re looking to spruce up your outdoor space with Adirondack chairs, you may have a few questions in mind. We’re happy to help answer them and get you on your way to total relaxation.

What are Adirondack chairs?

Unlike outdoor dining and side chairs, which often have straight backs, Adirondack chairs have gently sloping backs that let you recline more. Their seats are lower to the ground, which means you can really stretch out your legs and relax instead of sitting mostly upright.

They’re traditionally made of wide wood slats with curved backs and large, paddle shaped arms — these are great spots for balancing a drink and a book!

Do Adirondack chairs only come in wood?

While wood is certainly a classic option, today’s Adirondack chairs come in a variety of materials. Each has its own style and benefits:

Wooden chairs imparts a warm, rustic look to your outdoor space. Look for durable hardwoods that can stand up to the elements without warping or cracking, such as teak, cedar, and acacia.

Plastic chairs are lightweight and easy to move around. They come in a wide range of colors and are easy to clean. You’ll want to store plastic Adirondack chairs inside to keep their colors from fading in the sun.

Metal chairs are durable and often clean up with a quick wipe-down. Designs made with metal can be quite lightweight, too. Most Adirondack chairs with metal incorporate the material into their frames for lightweight stability.

Resin is a fade-resistant material that’s similar to plastic, but denser and more durable. It can be molded into different shapes and textures, all of which are easy to clean. Resin pieces can be heavy, but they’re a great option if you don’t plan to move your chairs around often.

Related advice: How to Care for and Clean Adirondack Chairs

Are there other Adirondack chair styles to choose from?

Absolutely! If you don’t prefer the classic Adirondack shape but are still interested in all the comfort, you can choose from a wide variety of modernized designs. Consider one of these fun and fanciful options, and add an ottoman for extra leg support:

Craftsman/Mission-style chairs with solid, more upright lines and rectangular backs

Modern/contemporary chairs with thinner armrests and swooping, curved seats for added comfort and dramatic style

Southwest-inspired designs with rounded log arms and rough-hewn slats for a more rustic look

Transitional style chairs that come in fun colors and shapes and may lack arms for a sleeker profile

Easy, breezy Adirondack chairs look great and help you fully enjoy your outdoor space. Choose a material and style you love, and you’ll be basking in your new conversation and relaxation area in no time!

Porch Swings, How to Choose the Perfect Porch Swing

A porch swing brings a distinctive style to your home. Hang one on your front porch to refresh your home’s welcoming curb appeal. Add one or more freestanding swings to your backyard, deck, or patio for rest and relaxation. Here are a few tips on selecting the right proportion and style swing.

What types and styles of porch swings can I find?

Traditional porch swings in wood or wicker add grace to any setting. Wood swings with slat backs and Victorian-style wicker swings add a touch of yesteryear. Look for Adirondack log swing or Craftsman style for rustic exterior rooms.

Canopy swings offer a touch of vintage backyard charm with a matching protective cover. Framed freestanding swings can nestle anywhere you want to turn a sunny spot into a shaded romantic rendezvous.

Porch swing beds are considered a cross between hammocks and porch swings. They’re spacious, come in deeper widths, and sometimes backless, ideal for leisurely outdoor naps.

Hanging chairs are outdoor egg-shaped resin wicker frames with cushions ideal for one person. Or hang a hanging hammock chair on a heavy-duty tree limb in the backyard.

What materials are porch swings made from?

Swings come in all materials, including hard woods, recycled plastic, metal, wrought iron, and resin wicker. Today’s materials are designed to handle harsh elements, though always check the instructions to see if your swing should be placed under a roof.

Related: More information on styles, material, and size for choosing the right porch swing

How long are porch swings?

The length of a porch seat depends on the number of people that can fit. A standard two-person outdoor patio swing will measure between 4 and a little over 5 feet long depending on the style. You’ll find the following lengths:

Single seat: 28 in. wide

Two to three seater: approximately 63 to 67 in. wide

Four seater: 72 in. wide or outdoor swing beds, which are like suspended mattresses

Always check weight limits on hanging and freestanding swings, as well. Weight limits vary by style, but consider going for larger weight limits when possible if you won’t be the only person using the swing.

How high off the floor should a porch swing seat hang?

The bottom of the swing seat should be about 17 to 19 inches off the porch’s ground for ideal comfort.

How much space do I need for a porch swing?

For clearance, make sure there’s between 2 and 1/2 feet and 4 feet of space behind the swing seat. Leave about 1 to 2 feet on either side of the swing so you can put a small table at each end.

Porch swings also come with durable outdoor seat and back cushions that coordinate with your outdoor furniture sets. These elements make the process of selecting your patio or porch swing even more fun because they give you a chance to really personalize the design.

Bird Baths, Splash — Your Feathered Friends Will Love Their New Bird Bath

Create your own tranquil oasis with a bird bath in your garden. Whether you’re a birdwatcher or you just love having a nice water feature in your yard, you’ll love the great selection of garden bird baths from Hayneedle.

A bird bath is a classic way to bring a decorative touch to your garden and attract local birds at the same time. Most common is the pedestal style bird bath made of cast stone, ceramic, metal, or resin. You’ll also find a great selection of hanging bird baths, tiered styles, deck-mounted options, and more. Place your bird bath in a spot where you’ll be able to enjoy the activity, and if it’s a fountain bird bath you’ll need to place it near a power source. Or, consider a solar powered bird bath and all you’ll need is plenty of direct sun.

Take a look at what’s new in bird baths today:

Solar Bird Baths: Give your backyard birds a treat with a solar-powered bird bath! These modern designs feature a self-contained unit that recirculates the water using solar power, so you don’t need to hook it up to a hose or extension cord. How’s that for convenience and function? Solar bird baths come in many styles including pedestal, tiered and ground designs.

Heated Bird Baths: Enjoy seeing your feathered friends all winter long with a heated bird bath to provide a source of fresh drinking water. Beautiful on a deck or patio, you’ll love the look and function that heated bird baths provide.

Bird Bath Fountains: The trickle of water will attract birds to your fountain, and you’ll want to stay a while to watch, too! Bird bath fountains come in many designs from traditional to modern. Find a cast stone pedestal fountain or a unique wall mounted fountain for your home. Whichever design you select, the birds will love the new retreat you’ve created in your garden.

To keep the birds coming back, change the water as often as possible and scrub the basin with a stiff brush once a week to eliminate algae and other debris. Fountain bird baths stay fresher a little longer because of the circulating water. You can even add a water pump to a standard bird bath and get the same effect. The flowing water attracts the birds, creates a soothing trickle, and reduces algae and mosquitos. Consider other perks, like a heater, to keep the water comfortable in the cooler months.

Wind Chimes

Over the years, wind chimes have become much more than cute decorations that make a pretty sound in the breeze. Wind chimes are available in so many stylish designs and modern materials, that today they are becoming an art form and a beautiful way to accent your patio or garden. Hayneedle’s wide selection of wind chimes offers you the ultimate way to shop for wind chimes for your home.

Add a wind chime to your porch, patio, or garden and enjoy enchanting sounds brought about by every breeze. Although wind chimes are often simply used as decorative outdoor accents, they can also be used as a source for calming the mind and relaxing the body. Positive sounds created by wind chimes, from fountain-like trickling to fuller, rich bell-like tones, can help release stress and provide a sense of balance and well-being.

Top wind chime designs include many unique materials that also create their own special tone and sound. Choose from our selection ofmetal wind chimes made from aluminum, copper, cast iron, steel or brass. Other interesting designs are made from capiz shell, bamboo or glass to create stunning wind chimes that will enhance your outdoor décor.

Ranging from minimalist to ornate in style, wind chimes are made from a variety of materials, and each presents a different sound. Whereas wooden or bamboo wind chimes generate a natural, calming tone, metal chimes deliver a precise tone. Tonal details such as size, type of striker, and number of tubes impact sound as well, so keep them in mind when shopping for your ideal chime. Recognized and trusted brands include Corinthian, Woodstock, Grace Note, and Music of the Spheres – offering up chimes that produce the most pleasing and purest of notes.

Not sure what style of wind chimes to buy?

We carry wind chimes ranging from small (under 10 inches) to extra-long (over 50 inches), so there’s one that’s perfect for any space. Our chimes also have varying tones, so you can choose what sound you would prefer. From popular bamboo wind chimes and Woodstock wind chimes to abstract gongs and hanging bells, you’re sure to find the perfect melodious chimes.

For even more variety, shop personalized wind chimes that make a special gift or memorial wind chimes for a lovely remembrance. Find feng shui wind chimes inspired by Asian design, or select celebration wind chimes as a wedding gift. Hayneedle also carries a selection of indoor wind chimes in tabletop and hanging styles, so there’s no limit to the decorating possibilities.

Outdoor Rugs to Complete Outdoor Spaces

You know you want an outdoor rug. That feeling of “completeness” you got when you first laid down a rug in your living room? Yeah, that’s what an outdoor rug will accomplish for your porch, patio, or deck. Along with the aesthetic appeal, it’ll be a treat for your feet!

Styles and Themes

Perhaps the first step in choosing a rug is determining what style would best complete the space. Rugs can be a focal point or a coordinating element of an overall scene. Whether it’s traditional, transitional, contemporary, or modern, let it be an expression of your personality. Traditional options include floral, scroll, and paisley patterns, as well as intricate designs modeled after Persian rugs. These will go well with wicker furniture. Contemporary and modern styles will feature stripes, bold colors, and abstract and geometric patterns. Pair a modern outdoor rug with modern outdoor furniture for a seamless scene. Transitional rugs borrow from both, resulting in eclectic styles that satisfy many design tastes. Expect floral patterns modernized with large scale blooms, Persian styles with palm fronds, and the occasional animal print. These rugs will mix perfectly with most outdoor furniture.

Materials

What a rug is made out of is another important factor. Natural materials such as bamboo, jute, and sisal will fit right in with the rest of nature. These types of rugs withstand weathering wonderfully. And since the material is naturally-occurring, no harsh chemicals are used in the manufacturing process.

Polypropylene and recycled plastic are also popular choices because they are mold- and mildew-resistant. Most rugs made from these materials are also UV protected, meaning they won’t fade as time goes by. They are very easy to clean, simply spray with the garden hose and let dry in the sun!

Shapes

While rectangle rugs are the most popular, other options such as round and square are effective as well. Round rugs will fit nicely in smaller areas and offer an equalizing and unending shape if you follow the art of Feng Shui. Square rugs offer an updated shape, and are also good for smaller areas. They create the perfect place to set your outdoor table set on.

The obvious benefit of an outdoor rug is that it will require little maintenance and will stand up to the elements. Hayneedle offers a wide variety to choose from, so you’re sure to find a solution no matter what your outdoor style preferences!

Arbors, Elevate Your Garden’s Beauty

Cultivate a picturesque landscape with a beautiful arbor. These outdoor frames can be used to define a walkway or garden entrance, or to add another dimension to ground-level plantings. We have a wide selection of arbors in various materials and styles. Choose the perfect design to create a garden scene with classic elegance.

Wrought Iron — Wrought iron arbors are steeped in artistic tradition. Iron has been worked into delicately scrolled and flourished fencing, gates, and trellises for centuries. This ornate look adds timeless beauty to any garden area.

Steel — Mild steel construction is a strong and economical choice. Some steel designs emulate the ornate wrought iron looks of the past, while others offer more contemporary options. Steel is a good choice for bench and swing models for years of durable strength.

Vinyl — Vinyl is a great low-maintenance option. UV protection ensures they will not fade or crack, and they can simply be hosed off with water for a bright, clean appearance. Vinyl styles are often white, so choosing this style can create a cohesive landscape with a white house or white fencing.

Wood — Wood lends a natural look to your yard or garden. This style is often made from cedar for outdoor durability. Wood arbors can be stained, painted, or left natural. Untreated cedar will age to an attractive silver grey, or you can use a wood sealant to preserve the bright cedar color. These styles can be a perfect complement to a wood deck or other yard elements, like natural wood fencing or garden borders.

Gabled, Arched, or Flat — Consider what you prefer, as gabled, arched, or flat styles all produce a different effect. Arched designs are a classic choice, while gabled peaks add a twist of visual interest. Flat pergola arbors can evoke a traditional cottage or Asian aesthetic.

Gates, Benches, and Swings — Location will help determine what features you choose. As the welcoming fixture for a yard or garden, a gated style may the perfect look. Bench and swing designs can create a cozy alcove within the garden, offering protected seating while supporting vining plants.

Plants — There are many climbing plants that will make good use of this new, supportive frame. Some favorite lowering vines include sweet autumn clematis, climbing hydrangea, wisteria, roses, and honeysuckle.

Accessories — Finish the look with key accessories. Planter boxes or side wings can help to visually anchor your new arch. Also, doors can be added to many open designs to transform them into a gated garden entrance.

Potting Benches

Like a fantastic hybrid of some very useful furniture pieces from the sideboard to the baker’s rack to the kitchen island, the potting bench is built for function. Think of it as an extra helper in the backyard. When the time comes to pot new flowers, or prune your bonsai trees, a potting bench makes the job more comfortable. Wide work surfaces are brought to your level so you can forget about having to squat in the dirt. Shelves keep pots handy, hooks hold your tools, and shelves keep potting soil in easy reach. The more features on the potting bench, the more helpful it will be in your gardening tasks.

Potting Bench Parties

But the really cool thing about the potting bench is what it can do after sunset. Wisk away the dirt, tuck away the trowels, and dress this item up with a table runner, some outdoor lanterns, and pretty serve ware and you’ve got an excellent drink or appetizer station for your next outdoor party. Hang a few strings of fun lights and stock it with adult beverages and you’ve got an instant poolside bar.

Brunch, Lunch, and More

Your potting bench can be used for daytime entertaining, too. Place it near your patio dining table and make it part of your outdoor brunch buffet. Some potting benches even have a built in «sink» that would be perfect for filling with ice to keep drinks cold for guests. It also makes an excellent food preparation spot for backyard barbecues.

How Entertaining

So what other ways are there to use a potting bench? The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Place the guest book on your potting bench at your graduation open house. Pile it high with presents at your child’s birthday party. Set up a cheese spread at your next wine tasting. Pull up a stool and work on your model car in the sunshine.

And Don’t Forget … This bench is made for potting. It may look so pretty that you’ll be afraid to get it dirty, but don’t be. Play in the dirt. Dig, cultivate, prune, and water. Potting benches are built to handle the rigors of gardening. Once you’ve discovered the convenience of owning one, what used to feel like a chore will quickly turn into a hobby.

Gas Grills, Tips for Buying Gas Grills

There’s nothing like good food that’s fresh off the grill. From veggies to burgers to main dishes, you can cook it all quickly, healthily, and with maximum flavor. This quick guide is designed to help you choose the gas grill that’s right for your home.

What’s better: charcoal or gas grills?

Grilling aficionados have been engaging in this debate for years on end and each one does have its own unique properties. For gas grills, faster, easier lighting and on-demand extinguishing is among the chief benefits. Adding wood chips or smoking boxes allows you to get extra flavor that you would normally get through a charcoal grill. Gas grills may be more expensive up front, but run cheaper per cookout in the long run. With charcoal grills cleaning can be more burdensome since you have to empty the ashes after each use. Whereas with gas grills, a quick scrub with a grill brush can do the trick. Ultimately, the answer to the question of the best grill is the one that you’re most comfortable using.

What are the different gas grill types?

While there are lots of shapes and sizes to choose from, you have two basic types: stand alone and built in. Stand alone gas grills typically have a stand or cart with a shelf or cabinet. Built-in gas grills are ideal for placing in outdoor kitchens or counters.

The fuel source may differ among grills too. Propane grills are usually fueled from a 20-pound tank. Natural gas grills are typically permanently tapped into the home’s natural gas line. It limits the amount of movement for the grill, but it also eliminates the need to refill tanks. You might also find charcoal/gas combination grills that let you burn a different fuel source on either side of this two-sided grill.

What should I look for when buying gas grills?

The amount of cooking surface matters, particularly if you frequently entertain or cook for a large family. If you have a small space and don’t need to cook large volumes at one time, a grill with 200 to 400 square inches of cooking surface may be sufficient. Otherwise, look for a grill with at least 400 to 800 square inches for maximum versatility. Other considerations include the following:

Power: British thermal units (BTUs) are how you measure the amount of power a grill puts out. The larger the grill, the larger the number of BTUs it needs to give you a great grilling experience.

Finish: Stainless steel, copper, pewter, and fashionable colors like red, blue, and gray are all in the realm of possibility with today’s gas grills. Choose a finish that will dress up your outdoor space with the look you like best.

Extra, extra: Having a side burner makes it easy to cook sides and sauces while you’re grilling. A gas grill with an infrared burner allows you to sear foods, like steak and chicken, at extremely high temperatures that are difficult to achieve otherwise. Rotisseries provide a classic method for grilling meat on a spit that allows the food to self-baste, cook more evenly, and be generally juicier as the spit rotates.

Number of burners: Even heat distribution is essential to even cooking. Most experts recommend buying grills with at least three burners for this reason. As a rule, the larger the grill the more burners it should have.

Choosing a gas grill comes down to considering the size and power you want and need first and foremost. Then consider the finish and extra features to find the one that’s best for you.

Fire Pits, Choosing the Right Spot for Your Fire Pit

Get ready to warm up while you chill out. A fire pit is the ideal backyard accessory for creating a warm ambience, casting a magical glow, and beckoning friends and family to relax awhile. If you’ve never owned a fire pit before, you might have a few questions about how and where to use it. We’re happy to give you a quick primer that’ll help you get started on your journey to toasty nights on the patio.

What is a fire pit?

At its most basic, an outside fire pit is a freestanding metal or stone container in which you can build a fire with logs or enjoy a propane-powered flame. Fire pits are glamorous alternatives to those stones you surround a traditional campfire with — they keep the flames from spreading and define this cozy gathering place. Fire pits are available in a number of different styles, including fire tables, fire bowls, pagodas, and tabletop designs for your outdoor dining table.

Where can I set up my fire pit?

Finding the right spot for your fire pit is important for your comfort and safety. The pit should sit on a level spot to limit any likelihood of it falling over. You can place it in a grassy area, but the pit itself shouldn’t sit directly over the grass. Set it up over something that isn’t combustible, like a stone slab or some carefully arranged bricks similar to a small patio. A concrete slab is an ideal area, too. If you don’t have access to these items, you can also purchase a fire pit pad. These non-flammable, portable mats install just about anywhere. When you place your pit atop the pad, the pad shields the ground from radiating heat. Learn more fire pit safety tips with answers to your most commonly asked questions!

How far should my outdoor fire pit be from my house?

Your fire pit should sit at least 10 to 20 feet away from your house. Remember that you’re dealing with an open flame, and safety is your number-one concern. These pits can emit a lot of heat. Even if you have a heat shield in place to keep things from getting too warm, the pits still heat up surrounding structures.

Your home isn’t the only thing that can heat up; nearby trees and plants can also catch fire if they’re closer than 10 feet to the pit. Never place your fire pit under overhanging tree branches, either. Floating embers can easily catch the limbs on fire. Keep a fire extinguisher, fire blanket, or fire pit screens, on hand near the pit when you’re enjoying it.

Can I put a fire pit on my wood deck?

You likely can, but please take a few precautions first. Your local building codes may specify how close the pit can be to the decking, but you should always place the fire pit atop stones or a slab like you would on grass. The fire pit base should extend 18 inches beyond the edges of the fire pit in every direction. In addition, you’ll want to keep the same 10-foot safety zone around all sides of your fire pit on your wood deck.

Can I have an outdoor fire pit under my covered patio?

It’s not ideal to install a wood-burning fire pit under a covered patio. Embers may float up and damage the ceiling or catch it on fire. If you’re still yearning for a covered patio fire pit, choose a propane- or gas-powered fire pit — the flames are easier to control. For best results, your covered patio should have open sides so excess heat can dissipate without causing damage.

Fireplaces & Chimineas, Get Toasty with an Outdoor Fireplace

There’s a chill in the air, and it’s time to close up your outdoor entertaining space for fall and winter. Or is it? With an outdoor fireplace, you can create a four-seasons living area that’s comfortable and warm. If you’re considering this type of fireplace, check out these answers to your important questions before you make a decision.

What are some benefits of outdoor fireplaces?

You don’t have to stop enjoying your outdoor living space just because the weather’s getting colder. Outdoor fireplaces make it possible to continue using your patio through most — or all, depending on where you live — seasons. Aside from the functional benefit of providing warmth, outside fireplaces come in a range of design styles, so they make great decorative accents that really boost the cozy ambience of your space.

Many outdoor fireplaces are freestanding, which means they efficiently emit heat from all sides. That makes it easy for guests to gather around. One more related benefit is that these outdoor fireplaces are portable. You can enjoy them almost anywhere it’s safe and convenient to do so

Where should I put my outdoor fireplace?

It’s a good idea to set up the fireplace at least 10 feet — or ideally 20 feet — away from any structures, like your home or your hot tub, and trees or shrubs. This will provide enough space for heat to dissipate. Find a spot that your fireplace can be close enough to your home or swimming area to be convenient — but also far enough away that it doesn’t become a safety hazard. Choose a fireplace that’s scaled to the size of your space, too. A 15-inch-diameter chiminea, for example, is better for a small patio. A large, 56-inch rectangular fireplace puts out enough heat for a wide open yard.

For added safety, set up your fireplace on a level area so there’s no risk of tipping. If you’re thinking about putting the outdoor fireplace on a grass or wood surface, use a fireproof pad underneath it. Do you have plans to set up the fireplace on a stone or concrete surface? Then a fire pad typically isn’t necessary.

What fuel source should I choose?

One of the great things about outdoor fireplaces is their versatility — and that even applies to the range of fuel sources you can choose from. Review the fuel types to decide which works best for your individual situation:

Wood-burning will provide the traditional crackle and flaming logs of a classic campfire. It’s a great fuel source for that classic ambience, but keep in mind wood can produce a lot of debris and be harder to keep clean.

Natural gas is a low-cost fuel option, but upfront installation costs can be higher. You’ll need to have a gas line run to this type of fireplace, so that also means these typically aren’t portable. However, natural gas is clean-burning and it makes a nice, hot flame.

Propane is another type of gas that fuels outdoor fireplaces. It burns hotter than natural gas, and these fireplaces are also portable because they run on small tanks of propane. Keep in mind that propane is more expensive than natural gas, and you’ll need to refill the tanks when they get low.

Electric won’t actually require fuel, you simply plug the fireplace into a safe outdoor outlet, and they’re «fueled» by electricity. They often don’t produce as much heat as other options, and placement is restricted to wherever an outlet is located. You may also be able to hardwire them into your home’s electrical system, but this can be costly. However, electric options are environmentally friendly because they don’t create exhaust.

Are you ready to get cozy? While your considering the fuel source and planning the placement of your desired outdoor fireplace, have a look at our outdoor fireplace buying guide for more helpful shopping tips. You’ll be ready to open your yard or patio up for many more evenings of enjoyment.

Patio Umbrellas, Factors to Consider Before Buying Patio Umbrellas

Get ready to add a little shade to your outdoor space to relax in cool comfort. Choosing the right umbrella finishes your space off to perfection, which is why we’ve compiled this quick guide to buying patio umbrellas.

What size patio umbrella do I need?

As a general guideline, choose a patio umbrella with a shade size roughly two feet larger than your patio table. This provides enough overhang to shade everyone sitting at the table. Likewise, it should be tall enough so that even your taller dining companions can stand up without knocking into the umbrella. Of course, keep the size of your space and your overall budget in mind before making your final decision. Here’s a quick guide to the right shade size for each table:

Small Patio Umbrellas: umbrellas that measure 6 ft. are ideal for patio tables up to 30 inches wide, while those measuring 7 ft. work well with tables up to 48 inches wide

Medium Patio Umbrellas: umbrellas measuring in at 8 ft. match nicely with patio tables up to 54 inches wide and the umbrellas just above that size at 9 ft. are ideally paired with patio tables up to 62 inches wide

Large Patio Umbrellas: 10 ft. or 11 ft. umbrellas are ideal for tables up to 84 inches wide, and umbrellas spanning 12 ft. and larger are best for large outdoor seating areas

Related: Check out our guide for more details on patio umbrella sizes.

What types of patio umbrellas can I choose?

The type of umbrella you choose impacts not only how the umbrella looks, but also how it works.

Freestanding Umbrellas

Perhaps one of the most popular types of patio umbrellas, the freestanding variety are also the most traditional type of umbrella. You often put these umbrellas through a hole in the table and secure it with an umbrella base that holds it securely in place. The canopy is easily opened by opening the shade, using a pulley or crank. The simplicity of the design makes these the longest lasting. If you know that you’ll need to adjust the umbrella periodically along with the track of the sun in the sky, choose one that tilts.

Cantilever & Offset Umbrellas

These umbrellas have an integrated base and an umbrella canopy that hangs from a support. There’s no center pole, which makes the cantilever or offset umbrella a good choice for providing shade for a table without a hole, your pool, hot tub, or a sitting area. Because these umbrellas are suspended from an overhanging support, and because they aren’t attached to a center pole, they can seem wind resistant and may be less likely to blow over.

Wall-Mounted Umbrellas

As the name implies, these umbrellas are fastened to the wall. Like cantilever umbrellas, they don’t have a center pole. Instead, they are supported by a bracket on the wall. Because there’s no base, these umbrellas take up minimal room, making them ideal for smaller patios and balconies. Another great option for small spaces is a half patio umbrella, although that style does include a center pole and base.

What are patio umbrellas made of?

There are a variety of fabrics out on the market today. The ones that last longest and offer optimal performance are breathable, waterproof, UV-resistant and appropriate for all-weather. If you choose a fabric that meets those requirements, it should stand up well to bright sunlight, rain, and other conditions that could otherwise destroy it. Sunbrella is a popular fabric option to look into.

Patio umbrellas add color, style, and much needed shade to your outdoor space. Choosing the right one for your outdoors dresses things up while enhancing the comfort of your patio, yard, or balcony.

Pergolas, Pretty Patios and Outdoor Ambiance

Pergolas are open-air structures used to create outdoor space. They usually consist of a frame with supports and overhead beams that provide shade and support vining plants. Pergolas are used to define a garden, patio, or walkway. There are many styles and designs, including freestanding structures, and those that attach to a building as an extended awning. Most importantly, pergolas function as an architectural element that can create usable space and privacy, while preserving the natural outdoor environment.

Transform a Barren Patio Into a Gathering Place With a Pergola:

Use a pergola with a side-screen to add style and create patio privacy

String lights through the framework for a magical evening effect

Install a pergola on the deck or in the garden as an architectural structure

Choose a model that includes rolling blinds for shade and privacy option

Climbing plants, including roses, morning glories, wisteria, passion flowers, and honeysuckle, can be trained to grow over pergolas

Pair outdoor furniture, like a conversation set, with a pergola for a comfortable outdoor living space

Outdoor Storage, Shed Your Clutter.

It’s easy to relax when everything is put away, tidy and in its place, tucked in convenient outdoor storage. There’s a serenity that comes from organization, and we love helping you find it.

Whether you just need to park a few rakes or park your whole car, we have storage sheds to fit. Wood sheds with doors, windows and a gable roof come in complete, ready-to-assemble kits that require only basic tools. You can do it, and it’s fun to build. Galvanized steel sheds are tough, rust-proof and handsome, and literally snap together. The biggest breakthrough is the new sun-resistant Polywood storage sheds that never need priming or painting, and can’t rot or chip. The color goes all the way through, so even scratches don’t show.

If that’s a little too permanent for you, let us introduce you to canopy sheds. Stronger than a tent but lighter and more mobile than a standard shed, they’re great for storing bicycles, ATVs, and other expensive toys that last longer when you keep them out of the weather.

Garden sheds come with plenty of ventilation, potting shelf space and even sunroofs, so some can double as greenhouses. Keep the mess organized and out of sight, turning a chore into a relaxing hobby.

The difference between a sofa and a loveseat is the size. A standard three-seat living room sofa is 84 inches long and usually has three cushions to seat three or four people. A standard loveseat is 60 inches long and has two cushions, so it usually sits two people. The term sleeper sofa, or sometimes called pull out couch, refers to a specific type of sofa or loveseat that has a mattress folded inside the piece of furniture and can be converted into bed.

If you have a large family, a sofa can provide enough seating for everyone to relax. However, a loveseat can also be a great addition to your living room. It increases the seating without requiring you to add another larger sofa, which can help your furniture arrangement feel more in proportion. Loveseats are also great alternatives to sofas in smaller rooms where you don’t have the space for something bulky. If you’re looking for a convenient way to add sleeping space for guests who come over often, a sleeper sofa or loveseat helps you create a cozy spot for them to spend the night.

How can I tell the quality of a sofa?

It’s easy to get sidetracked by styles and colors. If you’re looking for quality, though, you have to check the frame. Most sofas or couches have a wood frame, and those made from hard wood are more durable than pieces made from particle board. The best sofas have dowels and corner blocks supporting the joints so they withstand the pressure of daily use.

What features are best to have in a sofa?

Sofas, couches and loveseats have a variety of features designed to maximize your comfort. The way you use your living room sofa will help you decide which features are best for you.

Arms: Sofa arm designs range from the gentle slope of an English roll arm to sleek, straight arms. If you like stretching out for a nap, look for arms with a low profile and some extra padding that double as a pillow. Tall sofa arms provide extra support on the ends and let you curl up in the corner of the sofa while watching a movie.

Back: To add a touch of drama to the room, consider a camelback sofa with a curved back, or opt for the sleek, straight lines of a Lawson sofa for a more contemporary look. Traditional sofa backs are stationary, but couches with reclining backs are gaining popularity because they provide extra space for families to fully lounge.

Cushions: Sofa cushions should be comfortable, durable, and easy to clean. Cushions made from high density foam tend to provide firmer support than those made from lower density foam. Individual cushions are easier to remove for cleaning.

Upholstery: Choose upholstery that feels and looks good but is easy to clean. Floral print sofas and other patterns can disguise stains better than solid colors in busy households with pets or kids. However, solid colors like beige and gray are more versatile when decorating and allow you to add a pop of color with throw pillows. Leather and faux leather sofas and loveseats are easy to wipe clean, but fabrics like cotton and microfiber can feel softer against your skin when your taking an afternoon nap!

Accent Chairs, Your Quick Guide to Choosing Accent Chairs

As their name implies, accent chairs complement your décor or add a little pizzazz to the room. They’re wonderful additions to living rooms, family rooms, and bedrooms. To help ease your decision-making process, we’ve put together a quick guide with everything you need to know.

What are some popular accent chair types?

Armchairs, which may be among the most popular options, offer added comfort with side supports on each side designed for resting your arms.

Slipper chairs have a lower profile and no arms, giving them sleek, space-saving appeal.

Chair-and-a-half is an oversized chair that has a wider and deeper seat. These accent chairs are a good option if you prefer to pick up your legs, curl up, and relax in the seat

Barrel chairs get their name from rounded backs that look similar to a barrel, which add a traditional look and plenty of comfort.

Club chairs feature deep seats, high arms, and an attractive design that centers around comfort and a cozy feel that’s ideal for curling up with a book.

Wingback chairs Tall backs and winged sides boast a classic style that’s been used for centuries, which gives these accent chairs lasting appeal and versatility in how you use them.

Egg chairs are iconic, mid-century modern marvels that add instant contemporary appeal to your room with rounded lines and plush upholstery.

How should I pick an accent chair for my living room , bedroom, or reading?

Personal preference should always win over any stuffy rules. But if you’re torn between a few different options, try using these four factors to guide your decision-making process in choosing accent chairs:

Style should be among the first considerations. After all, you want the accent chairs to look great and function even better. Find occasional chairs that work within your decorative scheme while also suiting your needs. If you’re decorating your library, for example, stately club chairs or wingback chairs can make a decorative impact. Slipper chairs, on the other hand, can work well in a smaller dining room where you want to keep things looking airier.

Fabrics determine the look, feel, and care of your accent chairs. If you live in a home with pets and children, stick with durable fabrics like microfiber that you can easily wipe down. If you’re looking for a classic, rugged feel and don’t mind more involved maintenance, consider leather or suede.

Patterns of the fabric are another important factor. Use patterns for additional color or to add a pop to an otherwise neutral room. If the rest of your furnishings already have bold colors or patterns, consider choosing a solid accent chair to ground the space. Likewise, you could choose neutrals to go with neutrals to create a soothing, cohesive look throughout the room.

Features and accessories are other important factors. Do you need an ottoman? Look for occasional chairs that come with a matching version, or have fun shopping for a separate ottoman that coordinates with the chair’s materials or pattern colors. Do you prefer the ability to easily change position? Consider swivel accent chairs that provide freedom of movement. Or, if you’re looking to add multitasking function to your room, check out the selection of convertible accent chairs that fold down into a sleeper chair.

TV Stands, How to Shop for TV Stands and Entertainment Centers

For many people, the TV is the focal point of their living room, bedroom, or family room. For this reason, finding the right TV stand for your home is a must. Let us guide you through the shopping process so you can ensure everyone in the house has a great view of your screens.

What are some types of TV stands to consider?

TV stands come in a variety of types and designs that can help you create the home entertainment hub you’ve always dreamed of. Consider these types of TV stands and entertainment centers as you start shopping:

A low profile, table-like stand with a flat surface on top for the TV and drawers, shelving, and cabinets below

A large, elaborate entertainment center that not only has a place for your TV but that also has cabinets, books shelves, specialized compartments, and extra storage

A corner stand that’s built to fit right into that type of angled space is a great space saver

An electric fireplace TV stand that has the look and warmth of a real fire but is safer than real fire and cheaper than using gas to heat your living space

What size TV stand should I get?

Three factors should go into your decision about what size TV stand you need: the size of your room, the size of your TV, and how many electronic gadgets you have hooked to your TV.

Size of TV:

When deciding how far to place your TV away from your sofa or other seating, divide your desired viewing distance in inches by three to get the diagonal measurement of the appropriate TV size in inches. If you have 120 inches, or 10 feet, of space between your couch and the TV, a 40-inch TV is an ideal size (120/3 = 40)

Length of TV Stand:

Now that you know the size of your TV, you can choose a stand that looks proportional. The stand should be at least 2 to 3 inches longer than the width of your TV to look balanced. If you’re placing it in a corner or next to other furniture, this ensures TV overhang isn’t an issue too. So, for example, a 60-inch TV stand works well with a TV that’s 55 inches or smaller.

TV Stand Height:

Measuring for stand height is a little more complicated, as you’ll want the TV screen to line up with the field of vision of your watchers. Have an adult in your home sit on the sofa or chair in front of where the TV stand will be, and measure the distance from the floor to the bridge of his or her nose. Measure your TV from the middle of the screen to the base, and subtract that from the measurement you got from your sample TV watcher. You’ll want a TV stand that’s around that height.

Extra Organization Space:

Finally, take into consideration how many cable boxes, consoles, DVD players, and electronic devices you have hooked to your TV. Make sure you’ll have room for them on the stand. You may want to choose a larger entertainment center with open shelving that allows you to organize your devices, movie collection, and books in one spot.

What are some common TV stand features?

Once you’ve determined the type of stand and stand of size you need, it’s time to pick out extra features you might want. These can include:

Adjustable shelving to create a customized setup that holds all your media essentials

Flat screen mount for suspending your TV

Enclosed storage to keep DVDs, media players and other accessories concealed out of sight

Swivel to angle your TV toward a different seating area

Wheels for moving your TV to a different spot while you’re prepping for a party or need an entertainment setup in another room

Size, type, and function are the three main decisions you’ll need to make when choosing a TV stand. Go with the look that really captivates your attention, and you’re sure to enjoy the piece for years.

Recliners, How to Choose a Recliner That Keeps You Comfortable

Today’s recliners are made with style, sleeker silhouettes, high legs and more features than recliners of yesteryear. Recliners, like sofas, should last anywhere between 7 to 15 years. It helps to know the difference between the types of recliners on the market now and we have helped narrow them down.

What are the different types of recliners?

Push back: The common manual type of recliner requires using hands to recline or has a lever on the side to help you push back.

Power recliner: Just like the seats of a car, you can push a button on a recliner to adjust comfort, recline and control foot rest. Models may come with memory preset capabilities to save your favorite reclining angle. Adjustable powered headrest and built-in USB port options available on power models.

Power lift: A version of a power recliner that tips forward and rises up to help you get out of the recliner easier.

Wall hugger: Space-saving wall huggers have a limited range of reclining and sit up straigher so it can be pushed further back against a wall.

Massaging: A version of a power recliner that has back and lumbar massage mechanisms and heated seat option.

Recliner and ottoman: A two-piece recliner and separate ottoman. This style is ideal for contemporary and small spaces.

Which recliner materials are most comfortable?

Fabric: Recliners used daily need durable synthetic fabrics to feel soft but are stain- and pill-resistant. Perfect for homes with pets.

Leather: Durable and desirable for recliners because it looks and feels luxurious.

Microfiber: Durable, easy to maintain and comes in many colors to match your preferences.

Faux Leather: Bonded leather and vinyl are leather-alternatives that keep recliner costs affordable.

Extra Advice: How to Buy the Right Recliner

Do recliners come in different sizes?

Look for small recliners for petite people under 5-and-a-half feet all the way up to extra-tall for people over 6 feet. Oversized recliners can measure over 50 inches wide, 24 inches between the arms.

How much room does a recliner need?

Before shopping, measure your space. You need to know if your space can adequately fit a reclined chair.

You’ll need between 1 to 3 feet of space from chair to wall to accommodate reclining.

An average recliner measures about 77 inches when fully reclined and 35 inches wide. You’ll need a space that’s at least 80 inches long and 40 inches wide to fit the chair.

The comfort of a recliner can relieve stress and help you relax. Plus, today’s new designs look even better in your home than before. Consider your space and the material that’ll work best in your home, and enjoy revamping your living room or entertaining area with one of these comfortable chairs.

Coffee Tables, How to Pick the Perfect Coffee Table

Whether you’re looking for somewhere to place a hot drink as you kick back after a hard day at work, or you need a surface for playing board games with the kids on wet weekends, a coffee table is a wonderful addition to your living room furniture. Choosing something that’s perfect for your space may seem daunting; but here are some questions to help you spend less time shopping, and more time with your feet up.

How big should my coffee table be?

The most important consideration when buying a coffee table is, «Will it fit?» You must ensure it’s possible to move around freely without banging your legs, so aim to leave from 12 to 18 inches of space between the table and your sofa. For oversized coffee tables, measure doorways and stairwells to make sure it’s possible to get the furniture inside.

Once you know how much space you have available, select a coffee table that suits your living room layout and is in proportion with the surroundings. The height or top of the table should be level with the top of your sofa cushions, or slightly lower, which is usually around 18 inches; and the length should be from one half to two-thirds that of the sofa, approximately 44 to 64 inches. If you opt for a round table, a diameter of 36 inches provides a good sized surface without imposing too much on available space.

Extra Advice: Coffee Table Size & Placement Guide

Which coffee table shape should I pick?

The classic coffee table is rectangular, and works in a wide variety of room layouts; but that’s not the only option:

Square: An oversized square is trendy and modern, and gives everyone sitting around it an equal share of the space.

Round: For compact spaces, round tables are a good choice, as the lack of corners make them easier to move around Pair them with L-shaped seating for a dynamic contrast in shapes.

Oval: An oval table works in similar situations to rectangular tables, but they have a slightly more traditional feel, and there are no corners to bump against.

Unique: Show off your eclectic and eccentric style with something interesting, like an octagon or hexagonal table.

How can I use a coffee table to enhance my home?

The perfect coffee table combines form and function, serving as a useful piece of furniture with an aesthetic that enhances your décor. When choosing a table, think how you intend to use it, and which materials accentuate your style:

Industrial: The industrial style features distressed metal and wood, suitable for modern studio apartments.

Farmhouse: The country cottage style is very traditional, making use of weathered, reclaimed wood and whitewashes to conjure images of a simpler time.

Glass: The transparency of a glass-topped table helps to make confined spaces seem more open and adds an easy touch of glam to your apartment or smaller space.

Storage: If you favor functionality or your living room could use some extra organization, storage coffee tables are ideal. They often feature shelves for magazines, or have a life top to gain access to a cubby for blankets.

Nesting: These tables are great for saving space because they easily fit underneath one another. You can either place them around your living room or next to your sofa as a cohesive set, or keep them stacked until you need extra table space for guests.

Whatever your style or functional needs, the right coffee table has the potential to reinvent how you use your living space, creating a focal point for social and family gatherings, and ensuring that you have everything you need close at hand when it’s time to finally relax.

End Tables, A Shopping Guide for End Tables and Side Tables

Typically used in the living room, end tables and side tables can serve multiple purposes. From decorative accents to additional storage, you can’t go wrong by adding one or more to your home, no matter your style. Our guide provides you with the information you need to know before you shop.

Why do I need an end table?

End tables and side tables can do just about anything you need them to do. Use them to hold decorative items like table lamps, books, vases, or plants. Or take advantage of end tables with extra storage and size to hide other things like power strips, your gaming console or small electronics to keep them off the floor and out of the way. End tables with a shelf or drawer are great for organization. You’ll find that many of our end and side tables have additional features to make them even more practical, such as tray tops to make moving books, coffee, and food with ease.

How tall should my end table be?

The optimal height for the end tables you purchase largely depends on where and how you plan to use them. Many people opt to place them at the ends of their sofas. In that case, you’ll want them to be no higher than the arms of the sofa or, at most, no shorter than only a couple of inches. For any other space, take the whole room into consideration. The tables should flow with your other furniture, so anything that is too small might disappear while anything that is too large can easily overpower a space.

Should my end tables match my other furniture?

Both side tables and end tables are versatile in design and the right piece can easily blend in with your home’s decor. An easy place to start is with the shape. If you need the accent table to fit into a corner, a square or rectangular option is probably best. Or if you already have a square coffee table, you might consider round end tables for a nice contrast. It’s also important to note material and finish of the end table. Wood comes in a wide variety of finishes and comes in designs that range from traditional to farmhouse to modern, while marble-top end tables have a more distinct look. And don’t be afraid to mix materials and styles – this is your space and you make the rules!

Whether you need to fill an open space, hide something unsightly, or incorporate extra storage and surface space to a room, an end table will come in handy. You’ll find that they’re most useful in the living room, but can easily adapt to any number of uses around the house, and many of them are versatile enough to go with any style of furniture and decor.

Console Tables, Console Table Considerations

If storage space is at a premium in your home or you’re looking for an instant way to create a new look without rearranging furniture, a console table may be exactly what you need. Learn more about what these pieces are and how they help make decorating easy.

What is a console table?

A console table is a long piece of furniture that’s about the same height as a dining table or desk. Where it really differs is in its depth. Console tables are typically shallow, sometimes 12 inches or less, which helps them fit well into compact spaces like hallways, entryways, and even behind your sofa. They provide storage space and decorative flair without having a large footprint of floor space.

What console table styles and features can I choose?

One of the great things about console tables is that they’re not just about looks. Many of these pieces have functional details that can help you make better use of some unused spaces in your home. The following features can provide convenience and style.

Drawers below the console table’s top help you organize essentials and keep them ready to grab at a moment’s notice. Drawers are especially handy if you’re planning to place your console table in an entryway. That way, they can hold keys, wallets, gloves, and other necessities in an accessible spot. An entryway console table is a great place to arrange a decorative tray for the day’s mail, too.

Shelves typically extend across the legs of the console table, creating lower levels of storage for books or space for decorative displays. You can also add small boxes or baskets to a shelf for concealed organization.

Distressed finishes are a feature that makes new materials look old. This gives the console table a more rustic, timeworn look. Elements like intentional scratches and dings or areas where paint or finish looks like it’s been rubbed off are common distressing techniques.

Flip-top console tables have tabletops that either flip open to reveal storage space within or flip open to create a larger tabletop when you want to increase its surface area.

Casters are small wheels on the bottom of each leg of the console table. They make it easy to roll the table from room to room. Many casters lock so the table doesn’t move once you have it in place.

Pedestal console tables feature tops held up by a single column, or pedestal, instead of legs. This can keep the table and the area it’s in feeling visually lighter because four separate legs aren’t occupying the floor space. Pedestal console tables can also have somewhat of a traditional or even stately feel, especially if their center columns are carved or embellished.

How do I decorate a console table?

Display your personality by decorating the table. In an entry or hallway, it’s common to hang a mirror above a console table. Here are a few other designer tips on decorating a console table while keeping it functional.

Symmetrical vignettes: Symmetrical decorating soothes the eye as soon as you walk through the door. Place two of the same items, such as a pair of table lamps or decorative candles, on each end of the table. Or flank a vase of flowers or mirror between two similar lamps. It’s all about balance.

Asymmetrical vignettes: Asymmetrical decorating is also about balance. Style both sides of the table with different types of items in the same color or material. They don’t need to match in size or height as in symmetrical arrangements.

Under the table: The space under the table should be decorated and kept neat, as well. Baskets or precise piles of books go on shelves. Or, store two similar ottomans underneath for extra seating.

Versatile console tables work well around the house. If you’re looking to add some extra color and decoration behind your sofa or in an entryway, consider a console table to invigorate the space. Measure to figure out your available space, and enjoy choosing a style and finish you enjoy.

Ottomans, A Q&A Guide to Ottomans

Once upon a time, you probably thought of an ottoman as something you just propped your feet up on when you wanted to relax. These days, however, ottomans can serve more than just one purpose. We’ll explain why you need one (or more) in your home and how to shop for the right one.

What’s the difference between ottomans and footstools?

The words «ottoman» and «footstool» aren’t necessarily interchangeable, though you may have heard them used that way. While an ottoman can serve as a footstool, an actual footstool is usually a small, low bench that serves the purpose of propping up your feet, reaching high objects, or kneeling. An ottoman is typically multi-functional and can come in a variety of styles. They’re usually larger, more stylish, and more versatile than footstools.

What is a storage ottoman?

It’s impossible to have too much storage in your home, especially if your room has less square footage. Luckily, many ottomans open up to provide you with some additional storage space. Storage ottomans may have hinged lids, similar to storage trunks that open easily to let you tuck items inside. These ottomans come in different depths, so it’s important to consider what you might be keeping inside as you’re making your choice. Deeper storage sections are handy if you’re planning to store throw blankets and accent pillows inside. A shallower storage compartment can work well for TV remotes and other small accessories.

What is a pouf?

Another option when shopping for ottomans is the pouf. A pouf is a small upholstered accessory that’s usually round and can serve as extra seating. While not as large as an ottoman, you’ll still find it quite easy to prop your feet up on a pouf. With its smaller size not requiring much floor space, you can keep a group of poufs on hand to serve as impromptu living room seating for unexpected guests. The versatility of the pouf even extends itself to doubling as a side table if you choose one that’s tall enough. Poufs may have interesting and bright upholstery or come in leather options that feature embroidered panels.

Can ottomans double as seating or tables?

One thing that makes an ottoman so convenient is that you can also use it as additional seating when you’re entertaining. Some ottomans are as tall as standard chairs and sofas so your guests won’t feel as if they’re sitting on the floor. An ottoman that serves as additional seating is a smart purchase for rooms, condos, and apartments with less space.

If you select an ottoman with a tray, you can use it as a table when you want to serve snacks or cocktails. Or, simply place a tray on top of your ottoman to keep drinks and bowls steady. Many people choose to use ottomans in place of coffee tables to add a bit of softness and coziness to their living rooms. However, ottoman coffee tables are also available, blending the best of both worlds. They feature tufted, upholstered tops to keep you comfortable, but they also have legs like traditional coffee tables instead of bases with feet. You can stack books on your ottoman, play a game on it, use your laptop on it, or do anything else you would do on a coffee table.

When shopping for an ottoman, the one you choose will depend on your own personal taste, seating needs and decor. Ottomans come in a variety of hues, which makes them a great accessory for adding a pop of color to a neutral room. Consider your storage needs, too, to choose the design that works well in your space.

Benches, Furnishing Your Home with Indoor Benches

The indoor bench is one of the hardest working pieces of furniture in your home. It’s also one of the most usable pieces that doubles as a quick extra table, seating or storage and always at home as a place to perch your bags when you come in the door. Find an indoor bench that’s ready to be one of your home’s most prized pieces.

What are the types of indoor benches?

Entryway and mudroom bench: Just about any bench can go in the entry or mudroom if it fits. One key is durability in these high-traffic spaces, try and choose a solid wood construction topped with a polyester seat cushion with storage bins or baskets beneath. Look for benches with cubby storage or drawers that keep gloves, hats, and shoes neatly organized. You might also choose a two piece bench that has a storage shelf with hooks for hanging jackets, dog leashes, and other items.

Settee bench: A settee is a small upholstered sofa typically with arms, a back and a narrow seat. These versatile pieces can be used in elegant foyers, at the end of a bed, or pulled up to the dining table for extra seating. It’s a type of bench that’s generally not used for storage. Instead, they can add some personality to wide hallways, TV rooms, or anywhere else you might want stylish seating.

Bedroom bench: The typical end-of-bed bench is upholstered or tufted because you’ll want to sit on it often or lay your clothes on it. It has a soft appearance to fit in with a tranquil bedroom. It should be a few inches shorter than the top of your bed and about six inches in from either side so you don’t bump into the bench. Many models have a flip top for extra linen storage.

Ottoman storage bench: Ottoman storage benches often double as coffee tables, extra seating, and entry benches. They can have built-in lift top cushioned lids that reveal storage. Sometimes the lift tops flip over and become trays to hold drinks on top of the bench.

What bench styles can I choose?

Benches of any type come in an array of styles, materials and finishes to fit into any decorating scheme or room.

Upholstered benches have seats covered in fabric over a layer of stuffing. These can be more comfortable to sit on and can also allow you to add a little more style with your fabric choice.

Non-upholstered or wooden benches have seats without stuffing or fabric. You can add bench cushions to the area where you sit to make it more comfortable. This also gives you the opportunity to change out your cushions with new colors and patterns as the seasons change.

Rustic benches may have a country look with exposed wood grains and knots that add more textural detailing.

Mid-century modern benches often have sleeker, unadorned shapes. Their storage areas may look more geometric with straight or gently curving lines that mimic natural shapes.

Farmhouse benches tend to be a little more French country and come in light white or neutral colors. They may have beadboard panels or carved bases that add some eye-catching detail.

For elegant or traditional interiors, look for leather or faux leather benches with nailhead trim.

You can use indoor benches all throughout your home. The simple indoor bench is extremely versatile, functional and decorative. After the entry and end of bed, there are plenty of places to put a bench. You can even move them from room to room since they’re so portable.

Bar Stools, Revive Your Home Bar or Kitchen with Functional, Beautiful Bar Stools

Your kitchen and home bar can be a hub of entertainment for your guests, or where your family spends most of their day-to-day living. With that in mind, your seating should make both spaces more enjoyable for everyone! Here are some important things to think about as you shop for bar stool chairs.

How tall should my bar stools be?

Bar stool height is the most important measuring factor you will need to consider. Most bar tops are around 42 inches high, so look for bar height bar stools with seat heights of about 30 to 32 inches tall.

Counter height tables are typically between 34 to 46 inches high, so look for a counter stool between 23 and 28 inches tall.

What else should I know about bar stool sizing?

Understanding bar stool sizing is important for keeping yourself and your guests comfortable. When you’re seated at a bar stool, your elbows should rest comfortably on the kitchen counter at a 90-degree angle and your knees should also be at a 90-degree angle with your feet on the footrests. Make sure your bar stools’ seats are about 10 to 12 inches below the underside of the kitchen counter so your legs don’t feel squeezed.

Also plan for each stool to occupy about 28 to 30 inches along the counter’s perimeter — that includes the 6 inches you should leave between stools. Bar stools often come in 15-, 17-, or 21-inch widths. If you want wider seats keep in mind that you won’t be able to fit as many at the bar. Think about whether this extra width or the ability to fit more stools is your priority.

What bar stool styles are available?

Whether you’re building a new bar or redecorating an old kitchen, there are stools that’ll help your vision come to life. Learn more about the different styles available to narrow down your favorite choices.

Rustic: Rustic style emphasizes natural, rugged materials and textures. Many rustic bar stools are crafted from wood with visible knots and organic, asymmetrical lines.

Modern: Modern style has roots in German and Scandinavian design. Simplicity is key, and modern bar stools often have clean lines and little to no embellishment. They’re a great way to add color to a space without introducing lots of extra details.

Industrial: Industrial-style stools might look like they came from an old warehouse or factory. Distressed textures are common, and metal is often used in industrial furniture.

Farmhouse: Charming and cozy, French country bar stools are full of warmth and interesting textures. Rough-hewn wood and galvanized metal stools look at home in a farmhouse kitchen.

Mid-Century: Clean, organic lines and natural materials are standard hallmarks of mid-century style bar stools. This translates to geometric shapes, curves, and lots of wood and metal mixed together.

Coastal: Light and breezy, coastal bar stools look like they came from a beach house. They’re often white, blue, gray, or beige, taking their design cues from seaside colors. Natural materials like wood, rattan, and wicker are commonly used in coastal-style stools.

Whatever style you envision around your bar, kitchen island, or breakfast area, there’s a stool to match. Check the height and length of your bar counter, and enjoy the process of browsing for stools that catch your eye and suit your home.

Dining Tables, Settle in at Your Ideal Dining and Kitchen Table

Dining and kitchen tables are the places where you enjoy home-cooked meals and make memories with loved ones. It makes sense that they should be comfortable, durable, and have space for everyone to settle in. If you’re looking for a new dining or kitchen table, take a look at some of the key things to think about that can help guide your decision.

What is the standard size of a dining room table?

Standard dining table height usually measures about 28 to 30 inches tall. Counter-height dining room tables are usually between 34 and 36 inches tall. Counter height tables are ideal for tall people and those who prefer to sit up high. If your table is situated near a counter top, it’s easy to reach over and replenish plates, too. Kids and adults who aren’t as tall might find it a little more difficult to sit on the chairs that fit counter-height tables. Remember that you’ll need dining chairs in specific heights depending on the table height you choose. Chairs’ seats should be about 10 to 12 inches from the bottom of the tabletop to keep everyone’s legs comfortable.

The standard size table for four people is around 36 inches wide by 48 inches long. A larger family of six or eight people will benefit from a table that’s 60 inches or 72 inches in length. Keep in mind that each person should have about 24 inches of space along the table’s perimeter. This gives them enough room to eat comfortably without bumping elbows with other diners.

Dining tables come in round, square, oval, and rectangular shapes to fit the shape of your room. The ideal clearance for your dining table is around 48 inches on all sides of the table, if possible, but a 36-inch clearance can also work if you don’t have a larger space. This way, family and guests can get up and move around comfortably.

Extra Advice: How To Choose the Perfect Dining Table

What extensions & special features should I consider when choosing a kitchen table?

Expandable tables are great space-saving solutions for your dining room or kitchen. These table styles let you extend the length and increase the surface area of the table as needed.

An extension leaf slides into the center of a removable leaf table. You’ll need to store the leaf somewhere when you’re not using it, but these tables are often large and help you accommodate extra guests.

Drop leaf tables have large sections attached to their sides. These lift up for extra length and drop down when you don’t need them. A bracket underneath secures the leaves when you have them extended to table level. When the leaves are down, these tables are small and squared off, and they’re round or oval-shaped when the leaves are extended.

You can also consider getting a dining table with a lazy susan in the middle. It spins around for ease in serving, which works especially well for big families and hungry appetites.

What are popular dining table styles?

Dining and kitchen table styles really run the gamut when it comes to design and materials. Choose a style that fits your home’s décor. Think about the following options as you shop to get the look you love:

Similar to a mirror’s affect, glass-top tables help make a room look larger. Plus, they’re super easy to clean.

Classic, mid-century tables are more traditional and pair well with most other styles of décor thanks to their sleek lines.

Primitive, farmhouse style tables are functionally designed with details like distressed coatings and durable construction. They’re ideal if you’re going for a more country look.

Go contemporary with modern tables that have clean lines, unadorned legs and tops made of marble or slate.

You can also find a stain or color that matches your cabinets, if you want it to blend in with the other wood. Shades of cherry, oak, walnut, winter white, gray, and deep espresso finishes are colors to consider. Light colors can evoke a coastal style vibe.

Your dining room or kitchen table would have many stories to tell if it could talk. It’s where your family and friends catch up on conversations, play games, and eat meals together. That’s why considering the size and materials is such an important thing to do. When your table is comfortable and beautiful, it makes enjoying your space that much easier.

Dining Table Sets, Putting It All Together: Finding the Perfect Dining Set

Buying a full dining table set is a quick, convenient way to give your dining room an instant makeover — especially if you’ve got an old, mismatched set right now. But with so many different styles, shapes, sizes, chair fabrics, and colors to choose from, how do you choose? By making a list of your must-have features, of course. Here are a few options to consider when picking out the perfect dining suite for your home.

Choosing Table Size, Shape, and Height

First, you need to determine how much room you want your dining table to take. Do you just need seating for two, or for eight or more? If you’ve got a big, airy dining room and plan to host plenty of large dinner parties, then a big table with a leaf or two and a couple of extra chairs is a natural choice.

For a smaller space, consider a round table to act as your room’s centerpiece. Or, go rectangular with a breakfast/dining nook that can tuck into a corner and still leave you some room to breathe.

Finally, do you want a standard-height table for family meals? Or a counter- or bar-height table for sharing coffee with a friend and enjoying the view from your favorite window?

To Leaf or Not To Leaf?

If you have occasional guests for dinner, then a dining set with a table leaf is a good investment. Here, too, there are several options to choose from. A butterfly leaf is perfect for small dining rooms with limited space. In this type of table, the leaf (or multiple leaves) folds up underneath the table when not in use, eliminating the need for a separate storage space.

A drop leaf dining table also helps you save space, with leaves that fold down on hinges on each side of the table. Again, the attached, folding leaves keep you from having to find a place to store them when not in use.

An extension leaf, usually the drop-in style found in traditional tables, provides extra space for larger gatherings. In many extension leaf tables, you can add multiple leaves to accommodate a big group of people — just don’t forget to also add some extra chairs.

The Breakfast Nook: A Small Space Champion

Take advantage of corner space in a small dining area. A breakfast nook is a great solution, as many styles feature bench seating along two corner walls and a bench or chairs on the outside. Your breakfast nook can come in a traditional style, with all-wood benches in a finish that matches the table. Or, it can give your room a more contemporary look, with rich fabric or leather seat upholstery to add a bit of luxury.

Seating: A Perfect Match

Once you’ve determined your dinette set’s size and style, it’s time to consider the kind of seating you want. Consider mixing a bench on one side of the table with matching chairs on the other for a casual, modern look. Do you spend a lot of time around the table, such as hosting family game nights? You might want to go with a set that includes comfortable, padded chairs.

Spending a little time now to think about your dining room’s space, decor, and how you’ll be using your table and chairs will help you find the ideal dining set for your home.

Dining Chairs, Picking Dining Chairs for Your Table

While dining rooms come in all styles and designs, and the dining table is often the center of attention, your dining chairs are still important elements in the room. Are they the right size? Comfortable? Durable? Use these tips to make sure you’re getting the right chair for you and your guests.

How many dining chairs does my table need?

The number of chairs that you can fit at your dining table depends both on the size of the table and the size of the chairs. Typically dining chairs measure between 16 to 20 inches wide. And as a general rule, there needs to be around six inches of space between each chair to allow guests to sit comfortably and avoid bumping elbows as they eat. This also gives them enough space to slide in and out without disturbing other guests. Dining chairs with wheels make it even easier to move in and out of the table as needed.

How tall should my dining chairs be?

Dining tables and chairs come in several different sizes, so it’s important to choose sizes that complement each other. The standard dining table is 30 inches tall and there needs to be 12 inches between the seat of the chair and the bottom edge of the table for your guests’ legs to fit comfortably. If you have a dining chair with arms, aim for seven inches between the top of the arms and the bottom of the table. A counter-height table is 34 to 36 inches tall and counter-height dining chairs are typically four to six inches taller than a standard dining room chair.

What dining chair material is best for me?

Some chair materials are better suited than others for certain environments or level of use. Wooden and metal dining chairs are simple to clean. If you have children or if the dining room receives a lot of traffic, you can quickly wipe these down to keep them looking their best. Leather and upholstered dining chairs tend to feel softer and more comfortable, making them a good choice if you have dinner parties or enjoy having conversation after meals.

Which chair style works best for my space?

Once you know the size that’s right for your space, you can start browsing different dining chair styles. Consider the other furniture in the room and their color or design themes. Light colors are an easy way to brighten up a room and make it seem larger. While dark colors often give a more elegant and refined look to a design. If your dining room is filled with traditional styles or modern pieces then you’ll most likely want dining chairs that fit the same style.

However if you’re going for an eclectic look, your dining or kitchen chairs don’t have to be exact duplicates to work. Mix and match dining chairs in different colors or different styles for a unique look. For example, combine armless chairs with those that have arms or make half of your chairs a crisp white and toss in a few pops of color for the rest.

Selecting the right chairs for your dining room can maximize the comfort and style of a space. Consider size, materials, and design when making your selection. No matter if you desire high-back chairs or a dining bench, the perfect seating option is out there.

Buffets & Sideboards, Simple Storage Solutions With Sideboards, Buffets, and Credenzas

You can never have too much storage space in your home, and sideboards, buffet tables, and credenzas give you stylish places to store your stuff. Originally designed to store supplies for the dining room, these versatile pieces are making their way to other parts of the home where they add a decorative touch to the room. Here we’ll break down the differences between these types of storage furniture so you can choose one that best meets your needs.

What’s the difference between a sideboard and buffet?

Buffets usually have longer legs than sideboards, and look more like cabinets with doors and drawers. Buffet tables are commonly used in the dining room. Like buffets, sideboards may have doors and cabinets, but some have open shelves and short legs to make it look more like a narrow table. Over time sideboards are now mainly used to store keepsakes or fine china in dining areas, living rooms or kitchen areas.

What is a credenza?

A credenza is another piece of furniture that looks like a sideboard or buffet, but tends to be narrower and have short, slender legs. The cabinets are close to the floor and may have sliding doors that cover shelves and drawers hidden inside. In modern day, many people also refer to them as console tables. They offer the right amount of storage space for miscellaneous items in your living room, dining room, hallway or home office.

Can I use a sideboard or buffet outside the dining room?

Although sideboards, buffets, and credenzas all got their start in the dining room, you can use them in any room in the house. Many decorators still place buffets in the dining room where the cabinet doors hide stacks of napkins, serving dishes, and other dining accessories. Sideboards and credenzas work well in other rooms, especially in tight spaces like hallways. You can use them to display keepsakes and decorative pieces in the living room, or put one in the entry to store keys, umbrellas, and other items. Replace your nightstand with a credenza to keep the area beside your bed neat. You can even use one as an entertainment center in the living room or family room.

Which style buffet table or sideboard would suit my dining room?

These storage pieces range in style from rustic farmhouse to mid-century modern and come in an array of colors. So whether you prefer a contemporary black sideboard or an old-fashioned buffet with hutch, be assured that this dining room staple comes in a variety of styles for every decorative preference.

Farmhouse Sideboard: If your dining room is reminiscent of a warm cottage or homestead, consider a farmhouse sideboard or buffet with a hutch. These sturdy pieces were made to withstand time and often resemble a family staple passed down through the generations. Farmhouse style is light and clean in color – think white or eggshell – with accents of distressed wood or patina for an antique feel.

Industrial Sideboard: These sideboards and buffets feature raw materials like wood and steel. Their edgy, urban appeal makes them a stylish fit for loft apartments or spaces such as a renovated warehouse. The contrast of the metal to wood grain will add texture to your dining room, and features like pulley wheels make each piece feel unique.

Mid-century Modern Sideboard: If you love taking a step into the ever-so-stylish past, consider a mid-century sideboard or buffet for your dining area. The resurgence of mid-century style brings clean, smooth lines to your modern space and a pop of retro flair.

Modern Sideboards: These sideboards and buffet tables combine solid design principals of the past with style elements of the current day. While all sideboards come in unique configurations, modern styles are often suited to specific needs – consider a buffet table with wine rack – and work in both contemporary and transitional spaces.

Rustic Sideboard: Try a rustic sideboard if you’re dining room or living room encompasses a natural, rugged feel. This style exchanges frills for raw wood in neutral colors. Combine it with southwestern décor for a unique color palette and touch of the outdoors.

Sideboards, buffets, and credenzas are great storage pieces in any room of the house because of their low profile, large doors and narrow depth. Choose a functional piece that coordinates with your existing colors and style or select one that makes a bold statement in the room. It’s an attractive way to keep clutter out of the way.

Kitchen Islands & Carts, Kitchen Islands and Carts Make Cooking More Efficient

The kitchen is the hub of any home, so it’s important to have a layout that helps keep things running smoothly. Kitchen islands and carts help you do just that by giving you additional surface area for working and storage space to keep everything you need right at the tips of your fingers. We’re here to help you find the right island or cart for your kitchen.

Can I add a kitchen island without renovating my kitchen?

Kitchen islands and carts come in a variety of styles and colors, so you can add one to your existing layout without completely renovating the room. Turn the piece into a true focal point or break up the uniformity of rows of matching cabinets by choosing an island made from a contrasting material, like a stainless steel-topped island with wood cabinets. If you’d rather coordinate the new island with the kitchen, look for pieces made from similar materials. You can find islands and carts with surfaces made from granite, marble, and quartz so they blend seamlessly with what you already have.

What is the difference between a stationary and portable kitchen island?

Portable islands aren’t permanently installed, and you can move or roll them to another area of your home. Some, which are called kitchen carts, have locking casters to keep them in place. To move the island, simply unlock the casters and roll the island to a new space for food prep or to make more room in the kitchen.

Stationary islands aren’t meant to be moved. They’re often larger and sturdier than portable islands. They’re meant to look like a finished component of your cabinetry, and they may have countertops with overhangs where people can sit. They’re ideal if you want a relatively permanent solution without remodeling the kitchen.

How much room do I need for a kitchen island?

Ideally, you should have three feet of free space around the island so you don’t bump into cabinets, counters, and helpers. Kitchen islands range in size from small 24-inch wide units to those that measure more than 36 inches wide and come in a wide variety of lengths, so it’s important to measure your kitchen space before you make a purchase.

If you’re planning to add counter height dining chairs or stools to your island, you’ll want to leave three feet open behind the backs of your seats. In addition, plan for each seat to take up 20 to 24 inches of space along the side of the island where people will sit. With a seven-foot-long island, for example, you can comfortably sit three or four bar stools.

If you have a smaller kitchen, consider a microwave cart or storage stand with a built-in butcher block or granite cutting board on top. For larger spaces, check out stationary islands with slide out leaves that have room for stools or chairs.

What features would be most beneficial on my kitchen island?

Extra features transform islands and kitchen carts into practical pieces of furniture:

Bar islands with seating tucked under a ledge create an extra prep spot, a place for the kids to do their homework as they eat an after school snack, or a seat for your guests as they mingle.

A drop leaf design maximizes the available space around the island by letting you expand the surface area only when you need it.

Casters are a convenient option that let you move the furniture where you need it instead of forcing yourself to carry ingredients and supplies from one end of the kitchen to the other.

Built-in spice racks and towel rods keep supplies handy.

Adjustable shelves and wine racks under the counter provide plenty of room for storing everything from cookbooks and appliances to your favorite bottles of vino.

Beds, Choosing Beds for a Good Night’s Sleep

The bed is one of the most important pieces of furniture in any home. People spend up to a third of each day in bed, which makes it important for you to have one that you find comfortable. With all of the different types and sizes of beds available these days it can be difficult to choose a bed that’s right for you—so we’re here with some tips to help you narrow down your options and get a good night’s sleep.

What size beds are available?

Bed sizes are standardized, so you can easily match a bed frame with a mattress and sheets once you’ve figured out which one you like. The four most common bed size dimensions are:

Twin: Measures 39 in. by 75 in.

Full/Double: Measures 54 in. by 75 in.Beautiful outdoor performance

Queen: Measures 60 in. by 80 in.

King: Measures 76 in. by 80 in.

California King: Measures 72 in. by 84 in.

What type of bed can I choose?

Beds come in a wide variety of types and styles, so before you select a material you prefer, consider the shape and design of the bed. Common bed types include the following:

Platform beds consist of raised platforms onto which you set your mattress, and you typically don’t use a box spring with these beds. Slats extend across the platform to hold your mattress and provide air circulation. The platform may sit atop legs, or it may extend all the way to the floor. Platform beds often have headboards and may or may not have footboards. Some platform bases contain drawers that can be ideal for clothing or linen storage in rooms that don’t have space for dressers.

Canopy beds and poster beds have tall posts extending up from each corner of the bed’s frame. They’re great in a traditional space, but they also create a lot of visual impact thanks to their stately posts. Canopy beds take the drama a step further and may have fabric draped from their posts or from frames that run between the posts. You have the option to hang fabric from them or leave them bare to expose their decorative details.

Sleigh beds have gently swooping curves and are shaped like the old-time sleighs that give them their name. These beds often have both headboards and footboards, and the curves tend to make the frames longer than those on other beds. Sleigh beds have a decidedly traditional look, and they’re often available in rich wood with carved embellishments.

Panel beds are likely what you think of when you envision a traditional bed frame, and usually have side rails which allow for a box spring and a mattress. These frames have headboards and sometimes matching footboards. The headboards and footboards may or may not have actual decorative panels on them — sometimes, the head and foot sections simply match each other to give the bed a cohesive look.

Murphy beds are unique in that they fold up against a wall or into a specially designed bed cabinet that may resemble an armoire or entertainment center. These beds have springs and are hinged along the back bottom edge to easily pull down and retract back up. They’re especially convenient in multipurpose rooms, such as a space in your home that might double as an office and a guest bedroom.

The right bed is a bed that feels good to you and gives you enough space to feel comfortable. Whatever the size of your bedroom, you can easily find a bed that fits the look of your home and has the style you love.

Mattresses, How to Choose the Best Mattresses for Yourself and Your Family

The average American spends just shy of seven hours sleeping, which means your mattress can have a significant impact on your life. The right mattress can mean the difference between nights of tossing and turning and a good night’s sleep. When shopping for a mattress, there are several things to consider, including size, type, and firmness.

Whats the difference in mattress sizes?

Bed sizes are standardized, so you can easily match a bed frame with a mattress and sheets once you’ve figured out which one you like. The four most common bed size dimensions are:

King mattresses are the largest common size of mattress. The dimensions are 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, so this option offers plenty of space for two sleepers to move around during the night. This is a good option if you share a bed with a partner or spouse and have plenty of room for your bed. It’s also ideal if one of you tends to move around a lot in your sleep. California king mattresses are also becoming more popular, as these are slightly longer (72 inches wide by 84 inches long) than standard king mattresses.

Queen mattresses measure 60 inches wide by 80 inches long which is still comfortable for two sleepers. This size is easy to integrate into a variety of spaces, leaving you lots of room for other bedroom furniture.

A double or full mattress measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long, which is the perfect size for single adult sleepers. It also makes a good choice for teen rooms, as the smaller dimensions leave space for desks, chairs, and other essentials. Choose a full mattress in guest rooms, especially if that room doubles as a home office. Full XL mattresses are a great option for extra tall sleepers, these mattresses are the width of a full or double mattress but the length of a queen size mattresses (54 inches by 80 inches).

Twin mattresses are the smallest of the common standardized sizes. This mattress measures 38 inches by 75 inches, which makes it a great choice for kids of all ages. They work equally well in shared bedrooms and single children’s rooms. Twin XL mattresses are longer measuring at 80 inches long, and are the most common mattress size in college dorm rooms.

What are the most common types of mattresses?

Mattresses come in a wide range of materials and deciding which to buy often comes down to your sleeping preferences.

Latex mattresses are excellent for allergy sufferers, as latex foam wicks away moisture and dries quickly, which discourages dust mites. In addition, this material stays cool during hot summer nights and is very responsive.

Coil spring mattresses are very common becausse they offer both bounce and support. Most modern coil spring mattresses include pocketed coils, so the entire mattress doesn’t bounce as one sleeper moves. This type is very durable and allows lots of air flow through the mattress. Coil spring mattresses generally last at least 10 years.

Memory foam mattress is growing in popularity thanks to the material’s ability to conform to the body. This offers plenty of support and comfort throughout the night, and it keeps the rest of the mattress from moving or shaking if one sleeper tosses and turns at night. Memory foam mattresses are a comfortable option for side sleepers, but keep in mind it may not be ideal for you if you tend to overheat or live in a hot climate, as this material retains warmth.

Hybrid mattresses combine one or more of the above materials. For example, they may have spring coils surrounded with latex and topped with memory foam.

What are the levels of firmness for mattresses?

Firmness ranges from one to 10, with one being very soft and 10 being very firm. Contrary to popular belief, firm mattresses aren’t always best. The ideal firmness of your mattress depends on your size and sleep style.

Firm mattresses suit larger sleepers better, as they don’t sink down with more weight; however, lighter sleepers may find softer mattresses more comfortable.

Stomach and back sleepers are usually most comfortable on medium to medium firm options, whereas side sleepers often prefer very soft to medium mattresses or a pillow top mattress.

Mattresses come in the above standardized sizes, which makes buying beds, sheets, quilts, and duvets much easier. The right size, type, and firmness depends on how many people share the bed, how big those people are, and the size of the room.

Office, Work from Home in Style: How to Create a Home Office

Setting up a home office can be tough if you have a smaller space – but it can also be a fun, creative challenge. Carving out an area when you don’t have a dedicated office room is important if you work from home often or if you just want a place that inspires and motivates. First come up with some inspirational home office ideas for setting up and designing your workspace, then pick the right furniture, and you’ll soon have an office space that’s perfect for you. We’ve outlined some quick tips below to help you get started:

Make a Dual-Purpose Room

If space is slim, consider creating a dual-purpose area for your new office. For instance, you can split your living or dining room and dedicate a wall to a desk and other work essentials you might have. A writing desk is pretty non-invasive, so even keeping it on a wall on the opposite side of the room or behind a sofa is a great way to go. Gather up what you use most often and what will make you more productive. It’s also important to have good lighting. If natural light isn’t available, invest in a desk or task lamp, which can be helpful even if you are near a window.

Increase Productivity by Keeping Organized

Once you’ve determined a spot for your home office, think about how to arrange furniture and eliminate clutter. A clean space will help keep you on task and make you feel less stressed. If you have minimal needs, a simple writing desk will offer storage and space to work with a laptop. A more involved set-up with a computer or executive desk will provide ample storage. Either way, choose a set-up with a paperwork storage system and invest in a comfortable office chair, another key element for your space. Check out our guide on 5 Small Office Organization Ideas for more helpful tips.

The home office design you choose should be functional and allow you enough room to move around. If clients or visitors will come to your work space, make sure you have comfy seating for them as well. Remember, your space should be professional yet reflect your personality. After all, you want to create an office where you’ll be productive as well as a space you can enjoy for many years to come.

Desks, Finding the Right Desk for Your Home Office

When furnishing your office space, a desk is possibly the most important piece of furniture on your list. Knowing your options can streamline the process of finding the right one. Whether you need lots of storage or desire something simple that keeps you focused, it’s easy to find an office desk when you know what to look for.

What are the different types of desks?

There are a number of different desk types, each with various functions particular to their style.

Computer desks are designed for computer work with features that might include sliding keyboard trays, storage areas for USBs and cables, as well as ample space to comfortably fit laptops or desktops.

Writing desks are compact desks that provide ample surface space for writing while still giving you some elbow room to work with.

Secretary desks typically made of wide drawers topped with a folding drop-lid design to conceal the inside components of the desk for a tidier look, especially in smaller spaces.

Executive desks, computer armoires, and desks with hutches tend to provide the most storage space with shelving, cabinets, and drawers.

Standing desks are also recently popular in the workspace. These stand up desks give you the ability to either stand or sit at the desk with their adjustable heights. They have been proven to increase productivity and reduce health risks like blood sugar levels and heart disease.

What desks are most useful for small spaces or space sharing?

In both instances it’s rather important to pay attention to the size of your desk. When furnishing a smaller office area or multi-purpose room, look to desks with a smaller profile to minimize the amount of floor space needed. On the flip-side, if you plan on splitting a workspace with another person or for a completely different task, you’ll want to select a desk with as much surface area as your space can comfortably handle.

Small Spaces: Desks smaller than 40 inches wide will be your best bet for furnishing smaller rooms. They’ll easily hold a computer while still offering storage options underneath the surface or across the back with shelves, drawers, and cabinets. Corner desks are a great option here as these desks tuck neatly into a corner to make efficient use of the area. Wall-mounted desks are another idea for narrow spots with limited floor space, and as a bonus they can be super easy to clean under.

Space Sharing: Desks with plenty of surface area are sure to meet the needs of anyone sharing a space or working on more than one project at a time. Two-person desks will oftentimes have an L-shape with the desk sections extended in opposing directions and connected in the middle. Each side typically has its own storage options with filing cabinets, drawers, or shelves which can be helpful in keeping clutter at bay. The ample surface area of these larger desks allows each person to have their own space for desk lamps, accessories, and work supplies.

Should I be mindful of certain desk features or storage options?

If cleanliness is top on your list, glass-top and wood or laminate are easy materials to keep clean. Desk features that include a roll-top or folding door neatly store paperwork out of sight. Attaching hutch and bookcase options allow for extra storage using the vertical space above the desk. And built-in filing cabinets or drawers give plenty of storage space, keeping files organized and supplies out of your way. Since you’ll likely spend a lot of time at your desk, make sure it’s designed in a way that meets your work demands or busy household schedule.

Do any desks come with matching chairs?

Purchasing a desk and chair set can take the guesswork out of matching styles and you can often snag a deal in pricing. These sets come in a variety of design styles from the clean simplicity of modern design, the more utilitarian or industrial design combination of wood and metal, or a classic traditional look with varying wood finishes. Happily, selecting a desk and chair set requires no sacrifice in style or function.

You might spend a single hour of your afternoon or up to a full 12 hours a day at your desk drafting plans, managing the family budget, preparing a business proposal, or writing the next bestseller. Whatever you’re working on, a functional desk is essential in ensuring tasks are done to completion. Consider both the size and storage features you need in your desk, then make time to check out all of the gorgeous materials available to match your style.

Bookcases, How to integrate bookcases into your space

If you’re a book lover, bookcases are essential pieces for your space. But even if you’re not a big reader, a bookcase can be a fantastic addition to any room. The additional shelf space can help you display ornaments and photos, store your dishes and glassware, or house your media collection.

What types of bookcases and bookshelves are available?

A standard bookcase consists of a single standing unit with a backing and shelves. This is a good option for children’s rooms and small spaces.

Ladder or leaning shelves look like steps propped up against the wall. This offers a rustic look and can create an open, airy feel in your room. It can also double as a desk if you place a deeper shelf at table height.

Étagère’s provide a bit more structure and are similar to a standard bookcase, but it has an open back. This feature makes the piece less imposing in décor schemes with light colors and contemporary pieces.

Consider a library wall if you have a large book collection. Although many wall libraries are built-in units, you can also achieve the look with several modular pieces. Some of these pieces may resemble low dressers with shelving on top, which gives you more concealed storage in drawers or behind doors.

Extra Tips: More information on the types of bookshelves that can help organize your room!

How do I choose the right size bookcase?

To choose the right size bookcase for your wall, measure the height and width of the wall, taking existing furniture into account. Bookcase units can be anywhere from three to eight feet tall and come in a variety of widths. Pairing several narrow bookcases or ladder bookshelves together or opting for modular pieces can give you more flexibility.

Depth can also play a role in your choice. A depth of 12 inches tends to be common on standard bookcases, which can hold everything from hardbound books to mass-market paperbacks to some coffee table books. You can also choose ladder or scaffold shelves with smaller depths that primarily hold smaller hardbound and paperback books if you don’t want to overwhelm a smaller or minimalist space.

How many shelves should my bookcase have?

The right number of shelves depends on your storage needs and your own personal preference. A bookcase can have as few as two shelves and as many as six. A couple of sparsely decorated shelves can look chic in an open contemporary space, whereas a large piece with five or six shelves is an excellent choice for an extensive library. For more flexibility, look for a piece with adjustable shelves.

What bookcase materials can I choose to help create a certain style?

Wood is a durable option that works well in a variety of spaces. It can complement mid-century and rustic pieces equally well.

Glass shelves help create the illusion of more space and can offer a modern feel to your room.

Metal has a contemporary look to it, and since it is very sturdy, it’s a good choice for storing lots of heavy books. Once you’ve chosen a unit, don’t be afraid to get creative with styling options.

Present books and other media in groups and add decorative objects and picture frames to give your bookcase a personal touch.

When you’re adding a bookcase into your home, think beyond shelving. Integrating drawers can add storage options for smaller items such as remotes, cables, and other accessories. Cabinets and doors can transform a shelf into a hutch for dishes and glassware or keep toys and games organized.

Office Chairs, Selecting the Right Office Chair

A home office chair that’s designed to keep your body comfortable is critical for helping you stay productive. It takes a little bit of knowledge to select the right type and features that’ll work for you. Get answers to your questions and learn more about choosing an office chair that helps you focus and looks great in your home.

What types of office chairs can I choose?

Office chairs come in different designs to meet different needs. Consider the following types to learn more about what might work best for you.

Executive chairs have a stately presence, and they might be what you think of when you envision traditional boardroom chairs. They typically have high, gently curved backs with ample cushioning, and armrests are common features. Executive chairs tend to be on the bulkier side and look great at larger desks that match their proportions. The supportive and relaxing nature of these chairs are ideal if you frequently sit back to talk on the phone at your desk or speak regularly with clients.

Task chairs are a more pared-down version of executive chairs. They may or may not have armrests, and they usually have less, if any, cushioning. They’re ideal if you usually sit down at your desk to take care of quick tasks, such as paying a few bills or jotting down personal notes.

High-back chairs have backs that extend all the way up to your head or neck level. They’re best when you need to sit back for long periods of time because they provide support for your entire back, shoulders, and neck.

Mid-back chairs may reach to your shoulders or about halfway up your back. They provide support if you’ll be sitting for an hour or two without wanting to fully relax in the chair.

Low-back chairs typically don’t reach any farther than midway up your back. They’re great if you prefer the lighter, airier look of an office chair that isn’t as bulky as an executive style.

What office chair features are helpful?

In addition to the types of chairs you can select, office chairs also come with specific features that can help you enjoy a more comfortable working experience.

Adjustable heights: Chairs with adjustable heights let you lift and raise the seat to different levels to ensure your knees are properly bent at a 90-degree angle and your feet are flat on the floor. This is the healthiest sitting position. The seats of adjustable desk chairs typically rest on pedestals, and a lever under the seat lets you lift or lower it to a comfortable level.

Extra-wide sizing: For a more comfortable fit, choose an extra-wide chair that’s roomier than typical office chair designs. The average office chair is 20–24 in. wide, and extra-wide chairs can be 26 in. or wider.

Wheels: Office chairs with wheels, like adjustable chairs, usually have seats on pedestals. At the base of the pedestal, spokes with wheels on each end extend and can roll in any direction. If you want the ability to glide from your desk to a filing cabinet all without getting up from your chair, a design with wheels can be helpful. Another helpful element of pedestal chairs is that they often swivel, so you can face different sections of your desk without even rolling the chair around.

Feature-packed office chairs make it easy to stay comfortable and focused while you take care of business. Consider the style and convenient extras you want in your chair as you start the process of making your selection.

Accent Furniture Tips

Never underestimate the power of accent furniture. Anchor pieces might take up most of the real estate in a room, but extras like accent chairs or decorative chests play an important role. These smaller pieces come together to round out a look, offering the balance and added interest a space needs to feel thoughtful and finished. That’s why it’s important to choose wisely. Keep these three tips in mind as you pick accent pieces for your space.

Accent pieces might be the supporting characters in your scene, but that doesn’t mean they have to echo everything your other furniture is already saying. This is your chance to mix it up. Adding some contrast or unexpected elements gives the overall look that depth and dimension professional designers have a knack for adding.

Have a traditional sofa? Consider a mid-century coffee table. A rustic console table might go well with a farmhouse feel. Glam end tables can add a little something extra to a transitional room. Feel free to go all-out eclectic or follow the 80/20 rule, which encourages choosing one main style (80% of the room) and a supporting style (20% of the room). Many people like elements of several different styles. Accent pieces offer a way to play that up and express your personal taste.

While it plays an important role in the style of your home, accent furniture is also an opportunity to make a room even more livable. Short on space? Storage chests and ottomans offer a place to stash remotes, throws, and more. Similarly, garden stools provide surface area without the footprint of a large table.

If you opt for a coffee table, choosing one with a lift top means you can use it as a work surface, too. Benches often come with storage or shelves and an accent table with a drawer provides even more space. Things like accent chairs may not have extra perks, but it’s still important to think about functionality here. How comfortable is it? And is it built to last? Keep these considerations in mind while you style.

Because it’s often smaller, accent furniture gives you a chance to be a little braver with your choices. Feel free to break away from the expected. You could add some shine with a mirrored chest or end table. Look for benches with texture. Choose an etagere with interesting lines. Opt for an accent chair in a color that pops. Taking a little more risk with the finishing details will result in a look that’s less ordinary.

Choosing the Right Home Entertainment Furniture

Many nights, nothing beats cozying up on the couch and watching your favorite shows, movies, or sporting events. Create a binge-worthy space with home entertainment furniture that suits your style and puts the spotlight on the screen. Read on to learn how to select the perfect pieces for your living room, movie room, or den.

Find Your Flat Panel’s Paradise

Start outfitting your space by thinking about how you’d like to display your television. TV stands are the classic go-to and often include dedicated space for cable boxes, gaming systems, and other peripherals, along with cord management to keep things organized. Most stands also include shelving, drawers, and cabinets for media storage. For a TV stand that does double duty, look for a fireplace TV stand that includes an electric fireplace with realistic flames and supplementary heating for colder months.

For a more streamlined look or for smaller spaces, a TV wall mount may be an ideal pick because it allows you to set up your TV above a fireplace or other furniture without taking up a large footprint. Some mounts are fixed, while others include articulating arms to adjust the angle and depth of the TV for ideal viewing.

If you want a unified look and have a good amount of space, a TV entertainment center provides storage space along your wall to not only display your TV and store peripherals and media, but also provides additional storage and display space for books, keepsakes, and photos.

Select Smart Media Storage Furniture

We haven’t all gone the way of streaming – you’re likely to still have some DVDs (or even VHS tapes) that you’d like to watch from time to time, along with hard copies of your favorite music. Keep your collection on display with open media towers or hide it away inside a media storage cabinet with doors.

With the right setup, you can stop focusing on clutter and simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. Whether your space is traditional or modern, farmhouse or industrial, you’ll find media room furniture to suit your signature style here at Hayneedle.

5 Essentials for Your Home Bar

Make your home bar as welcoming as your local pub and raise a glass to the end of a long day, celebration, or holiday. Whether you’re hosting a party or simply serving cocktails for two, here you’ll find everything you need for a stocked and streamlined bar space that goes far beyond just a few bottles in a cabinet.

1. Space to Serve (and Store) You can carve out a functional bar space regardless of how much room you have available. Classic freestanding home bars come in a variety of sizes and styles and provide storage for spirits, glassware, and other essentials either out in the open or contained discreetly.

A bar cart is a versatile addition because it can be used as a full bar in a smaller home or a secondary bar for larger events and still provides room for all your happy hour favorites. If you already have a built-in bar in your home, consider adding wine racks, a liquor cabinet, or wine cooler to keep your space tidy.

2. Stylish Seating You can’t belly up without a proper seat, so if you have a traditional bar area, bar stools are a smart addition. Surround your built-in bar or standalone home bar with stools, or if you’re using a cabinet without much surface area, add a pub table to provide extra seating. Read our bar stool buying guide and shop by height, style, and finish to find the right fit for your space.

3. Tools of the Trade Be sure to have a variety of glasses to serve your favorites. Most drinks can be served in pint glasses, wine glasses, or highball glasses, and you can add to your collection as your repertoire expands. Coasters keep surfaces clean, while beer and wine bottle openers, jiggers for measuring, and martini shakers and strainers help simplify serving. Go above and beyond with muddlers, cocktail sticks, bar spoons, and tongs. Buy only what you’ll use regularly or choose a bar set with key mixology accessories.

4. Intoxicating Accents Put a twist on your home bar space by infusing it with some extra décor. Go classic with beer signs, sports signs to show off your favorite team, or rustic wine décor, or add a splash of color with neon signs and fun activities such as darts, game tables, or shuffleboard.

5. A Selection of Spirits Last, but not least, be sure your bar is properly stocked with beer, wine, and liquor. There’s no need to inventory as much as your favorite corner bar –start small by purchasing spirits you drink regularly and then add over time. Have an ample supply of mixers including sodas, tonic, and fruit juices along with your favorite garnishes to provide the craft cocktail touch. An ice maker and ice bucket keep drinks flowing smoothly so you can focus more on your guests and not your supplies.

A well-stocked bar can be as edited or expansive as you like while still keeping everyone satisfied. How to Choose the Right Bathroom Storage

Your bathroom is your retreat from the world. Style it smart with bathroom furniture that’s both beautiful and functional. Whether you’re updating your bathroom one piece at a time or giving it a complete makeover, read on to learn what storage items to consider when creating your oasis.

Properly Vet Your Vanity

Use your current floor plan and plumbing as a guide to determine placement and size for your bathroom vanity. Generally, you’ll want to stick with a single sink if you’re working with 48 inches of width or less. If you want a double-sink vanity, make sure you also account for adequate counter space. Look for vanities with drawers and cabinets for under-sink storage. It’s easiest to use the same mount as your current sink, whether it’s freestanding, wall-mounted, or corner-mounted. Make sure to check what’s included with your vanity in case you have to order sinks, faucets, or backsplashes separately.

Choose a Clever Cabinet

Depending on the amount of space you have (and the amount of items you have to store), adding bathroom cabinets can increase your storage options significantly. A classic wall cabinet can hang over the commode or sink, or if you’re short on linen storage, a full-sized linen cabinet with shelving and drawers helps keep towels, cosmetics, and other essentials close at hand.

A medicine cabinet instead of a traditional vanity mirror hides away everyday items and provides a spot for a quick double-check before you’re out the door. With hundreds of cabinet options, you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your bathroom.

Switch it Up with a Space Saver

For extra-small bathrooms, make the most of your over-the-toilet space with a space-saver cabinet. These designs come in a variety of styles made from metal or wood and fit around the toilet, providing shelving or enclosed cabinets to store towels and toiletries.

With everything in its place, your bathroom can look just as tidy and relaxing as the rest of your home. No matter your space, style, or budget, here at Hayneedle you’ll find the perfect bathroom storage solutions to help you stay organized and your clutter beautifully at bay.

How to Style an Entryway

Your entryway sees you off in the morning and greets you when you get home. Make the most of your entryway space or mudroom by combining style and function for a practical spot to start and end your day. Read on to learn about our favorite entryway furniture essentials to keep every day running smoothly.

Clever Console Tables

Console tables provide the perfect spot to drop off and pick up your day-to-day items. Select an option that’s not going to take up too much space while still providing you plenty of storage. Consider a table with drawers to stash away small items or additional shelving to display your favorite décor. Deck out your console table with lighting, plants, and small storage bins, bowls, and boxes for keys, mail, and other necessities.

Brilliant Benches

A little extra seating can go a long way in your entryway. From basic styles with simple shelving to storage benches with open cubbies or flip-top compartments, an entryway bench provides another option for keeping your space clutter-free.

Capable Coat Racks

Storage space for coats and sweaters is critical to keeping your entryway looking tidy and welcoming. Freestanding coat racks provide plenty of hooks for hanging while many wall-mounted styles also offer storage space for small items plus room for photos and other accents.

Hard-Working Hall Trees

For entryways with limited space, consider a hall tree that combines a variety of storage needs into one piece of furniture. The most versatile designs have hooks and storage options for footwear, umbrellas, hats, and bags, plus a little space to show off treasured items or store small items. Many hall trees feature mirrors along with a small seating area to put on shoes before heading out the door.

Attractive Accents

Put the finishing touches on your entryway with a rug to help anchor the space and keep your floors clean. Add a mirror to double check your appearance on the way out the door. If you have extra wall space, hang some shelving or wall art to show off your personality. Stylish storage boxes and baskets help keep items easily accessible without being out in the open.

With everything having its place right as you walk in the door, your home will feel even more in harmony, and you can truly relax after a long day. Mirrors, How to Shop for Mirrors

A mirror has the potential to transform your décor, making rooms lighter and brighter, and giving the illusion of extra space. Before you make your next purchase, take a moment to reflect on these common questions to help you get the perfect mirrors for your space.

What are the different types of mirrors?

There are many types of mirrors, categorized by size, shape, and style. Some of the most common types include:

Vanity: A vanity or makeup mirror is a useful addition in your bathroom or closet. Available in large sizes to fit nicely over a bathroom sink, vanity mirrors make it easy to see your makeup, hair, and outfit while you’re getting ready in the morning.

Wall: Decorative square and rectangular wall mirrors have an elegant style and work well in spaces like your living room or bedroom. Round mirrors have a contemporary feel, while oval mirrors are more traditional, especially if they have ornate, decorative frames. If you want your mirror to blend into the surroundings, look for an unobtrusive, frameless design.

Floor and Leaning: Large leaning mirrors are generously proportioned and are designed to rest against the wall without hanging from it. They often come with hardware to keep their tops secured to the wall, though. These full length mirrors are ideal for letting you check your outfit when you’re getting ready. Floor mirrors may also come in their own frames that hold them upright on your floor. These can be ideal in a space like a closet where you might not have room to hang something on the wall.

More Advice: How to Decorate with Mirrors

How big should my mirror be?

The purpose of the mirror often dictates its size. Small mirrors are better as accents, adding flourishes of designer style and flickers of interest, while oversized mirrors serve to enlarge the space and create more light. Full-length mirrors should be at least half the height of the tallest person who uses it in order to show a reflection of the entire body. The most important thing is to make sure you have enough space, so always measure your wall carefully.

How can I arrange mirrors?

Mirrors are just as useful for decoration as they are for their functional applications. Try grouping several mirrors of different sizes and shapes on one wall in your living room to create interest while also helping to bounce the light around. For example, you might try a grouping of different shapes — rectangular, oval, and square — that have a unifying feature such as beveled edges or the same metal frame color. You can also create a great geometric arrangement with octagon mirrors grouped in a honeycomb shape. A large mirror in your hallway really opens out the space and makes your home feel more welcoming, while putting an arch (sometimes called arched window mirrors) or sunburst mirror over your mantel creates a fascinating focal point that draws attention to the warmest part of your home.

However you use them, mirrors present the perfect way to add the finishing touch that makes a house into a home. No matter what room you want to add a mirror to, there’s a design that you’ll love in the space.

Wall Decor, How to Get Started with Wall Décor

Blank walls are exciting, full of potential, and can be downright intimidating. How do you get started? How do you know what wall art, wall decals, or wall décor to choose? This major design opportunity can tie your space together with a few simple additions.

Start with Measurements

Doing some math and measuring will keep you from making mistakes and having to re-hang pieces. The following steps will give you a range of measurements for wall art that covers about 4/7 and 3/4 of your wall. Measure the length and width of your available wall space (the blank area you want to fill, not covered by furniture, molding, and so on). Multiply the width by .57 and .75. Multiply the length by .57 and .75. The width and length of the wall décor you want should measure within the range of these calculations.

Go Big … or Go Multiple

Typically, if you have a large blank wall, go with a large piece (it’s better to go too big than too small). Oversized wall art or décor fills a visual field and creates a focal point, while too small pieces look forgotten and not well-considered. If you don’t have a large piece, consider multiple pieces or a gallery wall. Small canvases, wall sculptures, wall art sets, photographs, faux taxidermy (or a combination of all) can have the same effect together as a one big piece.

One final tip: Use Post-it notes to mark corners where you want pieces to hang, or pin sheets of paper that are the same sizes as the wall décor you want to better visualize them on the wall. With a little forethought and planning you’ll have an eye-catching wall in no time. There are so many options to choose from, so have fun shopping!

Wall Art, Decorating Your Home with Wall Art

Make your walls come alive with wall art, from prints, posters, wall panels, wall signs, and hand-painted pieces by artists. To make decorating easier, wall art comes in all shapes, sizes, styles, sets and configurations. Find helpful tips below about decorating with wall art.

What types of wall art can I choose?

Metal wall art has various finishes and comes in everything from steel to copper to wrought iron. It typically has a more sculptural effect because its shapes and textures may stick out somewhat from your wall. Metal painted with cured ink typically won’t fade indoors, and some pieces can even be used outdoors. In addition, metal wall art is easy to maintain. Dust it off and restore its shine with a clean cloth.

Canvas wall art is made of an image that’s printed on canvas fabric using high-quality inks. Most canvas wall art is for indoor use only. It’s typically gallery wrapped, meaning the piece of fabric is stretched onto and around a frame, which the fabric is secured onto. Canvases often have durable hand-embellished gel coat finishes for durability.

Framed artwork comes ready to hang with its own frame and protective glass. This makes it easy to choose artwork that has a more finished look to it. Framed art may be hand-painted or printed on paper, which is why the protective glass is essential.

Oversized wall art can help create an instant focal point in a room. These pieces are typically several feet wide and long, so their size alone helps them make a big decorative statement. They can work well over large fireplaces or above buffets or low shelves in a dining room.
What are wall art sets?

Wall art in metal and canvas comes in sets to make arranging the pieces easy. One common set is a triptych, which is a set of three pieces that either coordinate or have one painting or piece of art divided into three separate canvases. These are meant to hang near each other, and separating the art into three sections serves to create more visual interest. Another great feature of wall art sets is that, with coordinating canvases, you can divide the set up and place each piece around a room. This helps you create a more cohesive look in the space by adding similar patterns and colors at various points in the room. You can also try using wall art sets in the following ways:

Place a wall art set behind your bed in lieu of a headboard.

Hang a set of three, four, or five paintings along the bare walls of a hallway.

Hang the pieces in the set at different levels on the wall of a stairway to echo the pattern of the steps.

How should I arrange wall art?

If you’re hanging artwork above a piece of furniture, it looks best if it isn’t longer than the furniture. About 75% of the furniture piece’s length is a good proportion.

Hang a single large piece at eye level, or, a couple of inches above a sofa.

Hang large pieces 2 to 3 in. apart.

Hang smaller pieces 1 and 1/2 to 2 and 1/2 in. apart.

There’s always a piece of perfect wall art to reflect your personality. Enjoy the process of browsing for a piece that catches your eye and adds extra color and texture in your home.

Window Treatments, How to Choose Window Treatments

Make each window in your home as pretty as a picture with the perfect window treatment. Read on to discover how each type is different, where to feature them in your home, and learn our top tips to style your windows beautiful.

Curtains

Curtains and drapes are the go-to window treatments for most rooms because there’s a wide variety of styles and fabrics available. Unlined window curtains let in light while maintaining some privacy, making them ideal for living rooms and dining rooms. Lined window drapes provide even more privacy and can significantly darken rooms if you choose blackout style panels, making them more suitable for bedrooms or media rooms.

TIP: Layer curtains over blinds or shades to block even more light.

Window Blinds

For versatility, window blinds can often be a top choice, as you can open and close them as needed, and adjust how much light filters through. Traditional vinyl mini blinds are a functional choice, but consider faux wood or bamboo for an elevated look. Look for vertical window blinds for sliding doors that exit onto patios or porches. Be sure to measure carefully for optimal fit.

TIP: Cordless blinds provide added safety around children or pets.

Window Shades

Shades operate similarly to blinds as they can be raised and lowered easily with a corded or cordless pulley system and either roll or fold as they are adjusted. Window shades come in a variety of materials including fabric or bamboo and can either be sheer or built to block out natural lighting. Shades can often be easier to clean and come in a wider variety of styles compared to blinds.

TIP: Look for indoor/outdoor shades to add privacy and sun protection to a sunroom or porch.

Valances

While they don’t entirely cover your window, valances have long been a favored window treatment option. Their versatility allows them to be used alone or alongside shades, blinds, or drapes to frame a window and come in a variety of styles to suit any space. Consider a valance for window-paned doors, kitchen windows, or to add a fun touch to kids rooms. When hanging a valance along with curtains, the valance length should be 1/5 or 1/6 of the drapery length, so an 84-inch drapery would take a valance length of about 14 to 17 inches.

TIP: Use valance curtains to hide blind or drapery hardware for a sleek look.

At Hayneedle, you’ll find curtains, blinds, shades, and valances to suit any space in your home. Shop by type, color, material, and more to find the perfect fit, no matter your budget.

Rugs, Rugs: Indoor, Outdoor, and In-between

Area Rugs, Decorate for Warmth and Color with Area Rugs

Area rugs are a brilliant way to add color to any room of your home, and they often serve multiple purposes like keeping the front entrance neat and clean or protecting your feet from cold floors. There’s a variety of indoor rugs to choose from, with options of material, size, and shape, making it possible to pick just the right rug for your home. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while looking for a new rug of your own.

How big of a rug do I need?

The size of the rug varies depending on the room you intend to put it in. As a general guideline, you’ll want to leave at least 18 inches of bare floor exposed around the perimeter of the room. This keeps things feeling spacious. A rug that can fit all a room’s pieces of furniture on it can also have the effect of making a room appear larger and defining a space. As an example, you can aim to stick to these general room and rug proportions:
10 ft. x 12 ft. room: 8 ft. x 10 ft. area rug
11 ft. x 14 ft. room: 9 ft. x 12 ft. area rug
14 ft. x 17 ft. room: 12 ft. x 15 ft. area rug

What area rug size do I need for my living room, dining room or bedroom?

Living Room:
5 ft. x 8 ft. rug to fit just under the coffee table
9 ft. x 12 ft. rug or larger to fit all furniture completely on the rug

Dining Room:
9 ft. x 12 ft. rug to fit a rectangular or oval dining table that sits six to eight people
8 ft. or 10 ft. round rug to fit under a square or round dining table that sits four to six people

Bedroom Room:
5 ft. x 8 ft rug under just the foot of the bed
9 ft. x 12 ft. rug horizontally under the entire bed and nightstands

Learn More: Read up on how to choose the right size area rug with our simple visual size guide!

What type of area rug should I get?

Materials and Durability:

Area rugs come in a range of styles and materials. Flat-weave rugs don’t have cut piles. This gives them a smoother texture. Flat-weave rugs are commonly available in cotton and wool. They’re usually easier to clean because of their smoother surface, and they’re generally more forgiving when it comes to messes.

Medium- and high-pile indoor rugs, on the other hand, tend to both look and feel more luxurious, but they require more in terms of maintenance. These rugs have an open pile, meaning the fibers are knotted onto the rug and their ends create a soft, tufted texture. These are also commonly made of wool. Faux fur rugs are similar in that they have open — not knotted or looped — fibers creating a looser texture.

For a heavy-traffic area, choose an indoor rug made from a resilient material, such as nylon or sisal. These polypropylene rugs stand up better to consistent wear and can hide stains well.

Extra Help: How to Clean an Area Rug

Color and Pattern:

A bright, bold pattern, like chevron or geometric rugs, can be a great conversation piece. Consider placing a bold rug in a room without tables so they don’t cover the color or pattern. This helps it stand out and can create interesting color play with your furniture and accent pillows.

In a sparsely decorated room, a colorful rug can add vibrancy and serve as an accessory in addition to keeping your toes warm. However, if you’re interested in keeping a neutral space more subdued, go with a textured rug in hues similar to what’s already there.

For a space that already has plenty of decor or furniture, choose a neutral rug or something in natural sisal to help anchor the room. This adds texture without making colors compete for attention.

The right indoor rug can tie a room together and make a space feel complete. Look at the room as a whole while choosing a rug, and you’ll easily find the right piece for your home.

Door Mats, How to Choose the Right Door Mat for Your Home

Door mats are part form and part function. They add to your home’s style story, help protect floors, and provide a comfy cushion for standing. That means you’ll want to consider both design and functionality as you shop. Here’s what to keep in mind as you choose indoor and outdoor mats for your house.

Outdoor Doormats

Your front entryway offers the first impression of your home, and an outdoor doormat plays an important part. Along with providing a place for guests to clean their shoes, your mat is a chance to add a little design and communicate a fun message («Welcome» or even «Go Away» if that’s more your style). When shopping for an outdoor mat, consider:

Material. Door mats are made from a variety of things, including synthetic materials and natural ones, such as coir – a fiber produced from the husk of a coconut. Coir has a coarse surface ideal for wiping feet. Rubber and wood are other popular, durable options.

Size. You’ll want an outdoor mat that provides enough room for guests to comfortably clean their feet. 2 x 3 feet is a popular size, and if you have room, a 3- x 5-foot or 4- x 6-foot rug provides extra dirt-gathering area for high-traffic zones.

Design. You can choose from a wide variety of door mat designs. Some have raised patterns or boot scrapers to provide extra scuffing power, while others are woven or feature open areas to let water and debris pass through to the ground. You can find holiday doormats to change out for the season, patterns that please, monogrammed and personalized options, and a wide variety of images.

Location. It’s a good idea to place a door mat outside each entrance to your house. Put one outside your back door, garage entry, and any side doors, along with the front door. Since you hope guests will step on your mat, make sure it’s on even ground and doesn’t sit too close to a step, ledge, or décor such as outdoor planters.

Indoor Door Mats

Consider the seasonal weather conditions in your area when choosing the material. If you live in a windy climate consider ceramic, cast stone, wood, metal, or concrete planters heavy enough to withstand the elements. Plastic, clay, fiberglass, resin, wicker, or vinyl planters are best suited to mild climates.

Indoor mats provide a second opportunity to clean shoes in a mudroom or just inside a well-used entryway. They’re also perfect for adding some cushioning anywhere you spend a lot of time standing.

Kitchen mats, for example, can offer cushioned support in front of the sink or any prep area you use regularly. For maximum support, opt for an anti-fatigue mat. Some offer ample foam or gel cushioning. Other anti-fatigue mats use several layers of rubber or synthetic materials to help protect your feet from the hard floor.

No matter which indoor or outdoor doormat you choose, don’t forget to clean it properly. A clean mat will better collect dirt and protect floors. Care instructions will vary from item to item. At a minimum, you should regularly shake out loose dirt, and many outdoor mats can be hosed down to loosen extra grime. Wipe down non-porous indoor mats with a damp cloth.

Fashion Bedding, Refresh Your Bedroom with New Bedding

When you’re yearning for a fresh look in your bedroom, switching things up is as easy as choosing new bedding. A bedding set gives you everything you need to breathe new life into your master or guest bedroom. Learn more about different types of bedding and their sizes to help narrow down your selection as you shop.

What sizes do bedding and bed sets come in?

Bedding and bedding sets are available in standardized sizes to fit typical mattress sizes. Consider the size of your bed first and foremost, and then select bedding that’s designed to fit. If you like a more voluminous look, you can always size up. For example, use a king comforter on a queen-sized bed for a dramatic look if you want the comforter’s side drop to be longer. Common mattress and bedding sizes include:

Twin mattresses are 39 in. wide by 74 in. long. Twin size comforters are 66–68 in. wide and 86–88 in. long.

Full/Double mattresses are 54 in. wide by 74 in. long. Full/double size comforters are 81–84 in. wide and 86–88 in. long.

Queen mattresses are 60 in. wide by 80 in. long. Queen size comforters are 86–88 in. wide and 96–100 in. long.

King mattresses are 76 in. wide by 80 in. long. King size comforters are 100–102 in. wide and 86–88 in. long.

California King mattresses are 72 in. wide by 84 in. long. California king size comforters are 107–110 in. wide and 96–98 in. long.

And if you’re in need bedding that will be right at home in any dorm, there are also a number of Twin XL size bedding options designed to fit Twin XL mattresses that typically measure 39 in. wide by 80 inches long.

Related: Sleep soundly, knowing you’ve found the right bedding and bed sheet sizes for your mattress.

What types of bedding are available?

There’s a variety of bedding styles and types to choose from, and each can help you create the sleeping space of your dreams. Consider one of these types as you’re planning what to add to or replace from your current bedroom setup.

Bed in a bag: A bed in a bag set is a bag that comes with everything you need to make up a completely decorated bed, including matching flat and fitted bed sheets, a comforter, accent pillows, and pillow cases. This is a more complete ensemble than what you might find in a comforter or duvet set. Some bed in a bag sets come with 10 or more pieces.

Bedding sets: A bedding set gives you all the basics you need to set up a coordinating bedding look, but it isn’t as comprehensive as a bed in a bag set. These are ideal if you still want to pick out a few pieces, like accent pillows, that don’t match the rest of your bed. A bedding set typically comes with a comforter or quilt and two matching pillow shams, which are decorative pillow covers. These sets might also come with a matching fitted or flat sheet.

Bedspreads: A bedspread is a thin comforter or quilt that’s intended for use as the top layer of your bedding. It may be all you need in summer or an extra layer of warmth in winter. Bedspreads also look great folded at the end of the bed for an extra pop of color. They’re often available in solid colors or light patterns and can give the bed a finished look by smoothing everything out when you spread them over the mattress, sheets, and comforter.

Comforters: A comforter is a thick and usually fluffy blanket that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. You can use it on its own so the pattern is visible. These blankets are quite thick because they’re filled with down or down alternative, and they’re meant to keep you warm and toasty during cool weather. Many comforters have what’s called baffling, which means they’re sewn in a way to keep the filling evenly dispersed across the blanket instead of bunching in a corner.

Daybed bedding: Covers for daybeds are designed to fit specifically on these pieces of furniture. They may drape down the shorter ends and open side of the daybed mattress, so they have different proportions than typical twin-sized mattress coverings. Often, daybed covers have three sides much like a bed skirt, and they may fit tightly over the mattress to make it easier to sit on during the day.

Duvet covers: These covers are essentially large fabric sacks into which you place a comforter. They may have fun patterns or interesting textures, so they help you change up the look of your comforter without buying a completely new one.

Quilts and coverlets: Coverlets and quilts are thinner than comforters but still typically have a layer of batting inside to make them warm and comfortable. They aren’t meant to cover your entire bed and reach the floor like a bedspread. However, like bedspreads, they’re light enough to serve as your only layer during warm summers, and they can make a chilly bed warmer on a winter’s night. Quilts and coverlets may have bright, colorful designs. Traditionally coverlets are woven and quilts are made of cut pieces of fabric sewn together in a design.

Are you ready to inject some new color and style into the bedrooms in your home? Consider the size of your bed, and then enjoy putting together a dream-worthy ensemble by choosing the type of bedding you want in the space.

Bedding Basics, Quilt, Comforter, or Duvet — What’s the Difference?

Comfort is king when it comes to a good night’s sleep, and sleep is important to overall well-being. With so many bedding options, however, it can be difficult to identify what is best for your sense of style and comfort. Bedspreads, including quilts, comforters, and duvets, provide different levels of softness and warmth – what’s best for you depends on your individual preference. So what actually is the difference between these popular bedding options?

Quilts

Perhaps the most historically significant of all bedspreads, quilts were most common before the mass production of fabric. By stitching together scraps of fabric, quilters were able to create large patchwork designs. Although quilts today are commonly machine-made, they aren’t unlike those from the past. Three layers – top, batting, and bottom – are stitched together with a decorative, embroidered design. Quilts are typically made of cotton or a cotton blend and inspire rustic, country, or coastal décor. Their light weight makes them ideal during the summer months, but you will likely need to add extra blankets underneath when the weather gets cold.

Comforters

Comforters are the most common bedspread used in the U.S. today. Machine production and unlimited fabric options have made them affordable and widely available in different styles, colors, and designs. Typically filled with polyester batting or down, comforters are thicker than quilts and provide more insulation. The top and bottom layers of fabric are stitched together to keep batting equally distributed. Comforters are ideal for individuals who prefer a lot of options. Whether you prefer cotton, blends, or synthetic materials, comforters come in every theme imaginable, from simple solids to floral and cabin-inspired prints. If you’re on a budget, comforter sets include matching pillow shams to complete the look.

Duvets

Duvets are similar to comforters with a couple of important distinctions. First, duvets are meant to be used with duvet covers, and two, duvets are typically white and filled with down feathers or a synthetic alternative. A duvet slips into a duvet cover, so the cover can be removed and washed at any time. For this reason, some individuals chose to bypass a top sheet altogether. Duvets and duvet covers make it easy to achieve minimalist, modern style, especially if you choose linen in neutral colors. Swapping out your duvet cover is also more affordable than buying a new comforter if you prefer to mix up your look each season.

And Everything Else

While your bedspread is important, don’t forget to invest in comfortable bed sheets, extra blankets, and throw pillows. Read our guides on How to Buy Bed Sheets and Bed Sheets: Understanding Thread Count for more information, plus shop exclusive styles of all things bedding at hayneedle.

Bathroom Vanities, Choosing Your Ideal Bathroom Vanity: Your Questions Answered

Your bathroom vanity is where you prepare to face the day and wind down with nightly rituals, so why shouldn’t it be a beautiful spot where you can enjoy getting ready? We’re here to answer your common questions about the form and function of bathroom vanities.
What are bathroom vanities?

A bathroom vanity is a piece of furniture that holds your bathroom sink and has cabinets with doors or drawers that you can use to store toiletries and other supplies. Unlike a freestanding sink, a bathroom vanity holds a sink bowl in the countertop, although you can also mount a sink on top the vanity cabinet. The extra storage space is the primary benefit of a bathroom vanity, but it also provides opportunities to dress up the space. Just like kitchen cabinets, vanity cabinets are available in a range of materials, colors, and styles — and with different countertops made of materials like wood, granite, or tile — so you have ample opportunities to customize your bathroom.
Should I pick a single sink or double sink vanity for my bathroom?

Bathroom vanities come in several different types, so first think about how (and who) will use it. If you’re installing the vanity in your master bathroom, then a double sink vanity may be more convenient for you and your spouse to use while getting ready in the morning. On the other hand, if you’re redoing a guest bathroom that only sees occasional use, a single sink vanity may be suitable.

How do I choose a type of vanity?

Cabinet Only: These vanity bases come in sizes that hold one or two sinks. By selecting a cabinet only vanity base you have the freedom to customize your top separately, and pick out your favorite sink(s). You can have a contractor cut the space for the sink out of the countertop.

Cabinet with Sink: If you’re looking for super-easy installation, you might prefer a vanity cabinet that comes with its sink(s) already set into the top of the vanity. You can simply connect the plumbing after installing the cabinet, and your sink is ready to use.

Cabinet with Vanity Top: This option comes with a countertop attached and may also have a sink attached, but you’ll need to pick the faucets you like. These vanities typically have countertops made in a different material than the cabinet, such as a granite countertop attached to a wood cabinet. This is an easy option if you’re not looking to fully customize your vanity.

How do I measure for bathroom vanities?

If you currently have a vanity cabinet in the space and you’re satisfied with its overall proportions, you can simply measure its height, width, and depth and choose a new design in a similar size. However, if you’re replacing, a pedestal sink with a vanity, for example, it helps to know how to figure out the right sizing.

If you’re not planning on moving the existing plumbing in the bathroom, use the rough-in spot where the drain line exits through the wall as the center line of the vanity cabinet. Measure equal distances from either side of that plumbing to visualize what the width of your vanity will look like.

If you’re placing the cabinet near a toilet, leave at least 18 inches of space between the middle of the fixture’s tank and the vanity.

Most bathroom vanities are between 30 and 36 inches tall. Cabinet depths are typically between 18 and 21 inches. Keep these factors in mind — particularly depth — and check the swing of your shower and bathtub doors to make sure they won’t hit the vanity when you open them.

It can help to map out the dimensions of the vanity using masking tape on the floor and wall to better visualize how the piece will look in the space.

Also, consider what you’ll do at the vanity. Do you need lots of storage space and an area where you can lay out makeup each morning? In that case, a longer piece with a large vanity top is more convenient. Leaving 24 inches on the sides of the sink can provide enough space for your getting-ready toiletries and hair dryer.

A bathroom vanity provides convenient storage space and an opportunity to define the style in your bathroom. Consider your available space and how you plan to use the piece first, and then enjoy the process of choosing materials that express your great taste.

Bath Linens, Quick Color Update: Bathroom Linens

If you feel like your bathroom experience has been a bit blasé, new linens may be just what you need to get a fresh start. Not only do linens play a significant role in the home bath experience (Does it get better than a fresh, plush towel?), they are also an easy way to add color, pattern, and texture to a space.

Monochromatic vs. Contrasting Color Schemes

When it comes to selecting linen color, there are a couple of ways to think it through – do you want a monochromatic color scheme or something with contrast? Monochromatic is just what it sounds like: one color. A common monochromatic look for bathrooms is white – think white walls, towels, shower curtain, etc. – but if you prefer a touch of personality, don’t be afraid to incorporate shades of beige or light blue. If you prefer bright pops of color, purchase linens that contrast your walls and tiling. Shower curtains and bath mats come in an endless number of bright colors and patterns. Just be aware that, while contrasting, the colors should complement each other as well.

Color & Room Size

Bathroom colors can significantly influence how big or small your bathroom feels. If you are one of the many with a small bathroom, know you’re not alone! Just consider opting for white bathroom sets or neutral shades to help reflect light and create an airy sense of openness. If you really want color in your space, try avoiding big patterns and dark colors, which tend to make tight spaces feel even smaller.

Bed Runners, Dress Up Your Bed with a Bed Runner

Originally used as a decorative element in high-end hotels, bed runners have become familiar in home bedrooms as well. Also known as bed scarves, bed runners are thin, flat bands of fabric that lie across the foot of the bed. Although simple, bed runners have a practical purpose and add to the overall décor of a room.

The main purpose of a bed runner is to keep the foot of the bed clean, especially in hotels or guest rooms where individuals often lay on top of the bedspread without removing their shoes. Cleaning a bed runner is easier and more time efficient than washing an entire quilt, comforter, or duvet cover. Plus, they are a great solution if you have pets that love to sleep at the foot of the bed.

As for decorating, a bed scarf can add color, texture, and layers to your bedding set. Traditionally made of silky or decorative fabric, bed runners now come in a variety of contemporary materials, styles, and prints. They are an easy and budget-friendly way to mix up your bedroom décor and can be used to accent otherwise simple bedding in white or neutrals.

The size of bed runners varies, however they are typically 24 inches wide and 24 to 30 inches longer than the width of the mattress, allowing 12 to 15 inches to hang from each side of the bed.
