Hardly any other topic is as omnipresent to expectant parents as the topic “how should a baby sleep”. First and foremost, the question arises how to design the ideal sleeping place for the offspring in order to create a calm and healthy sleeping climate. Of course this isn’t only in the interest of the baby. It is also a blessing for the parents if the baby feels comfortable in its crib and allows mum and dad a few hours of sleep at a time. We have summarized some interesting facts about babies’ sleep, as well as some tips and tricks from our own experience.

Co-sleeping or additional bed

The first question one often asks oneself: Where will the baby sleep after birth? For obvious reasons, many mothers tend to let the baby sleep in their own crib. On the one hand it is very comfortable for breastfeeding at night, on the other hand the close contact to the baby is added. However, this model known as “family bed” or “co-sleeping” is not without controversy. In many cases, the fact that the child sleeps in the bed with the baby means that the parents no longer have a restful sleep. The conscious or even unconscious fear of turning over on the child or of injuring him or her by other movements during sleep often leads to the parents sleeping in a constant state of stress and the recovering factor of the already greatly reduced sleep volume is lost.

Neither the exhausted parents nor the children benefit from this, because the stress of the tired and exhausted parents is also transferred to the child. A vicious circle. A good alternative is a so-called additional bed. These beds are open to one side and are hooked onto the side of the parents’ bed and thus firmly connected. A suitable mattress, which is included in many side beds, ensures that there is a gap-free connection to the parents’ bed. An extra bed combines the advantages of co-sleeping with the restful sleep that is so important for parents. The baby lies directly with the mother and can be breastfed at night without getting up, but at the same time the baby has its own room and mother and father can sleep peacefully and relaxed.

What does a safe and pleasant sleeping place look like?

The ideal sleeping temperature for babies recommended by experts is between 16°C and 18°C. As you can see, the sleeping temperature is relatively “fresh”. Many parents think that the baby should be wrapped as warm as possible so that the baby does not freeze. Although it is true that babies can only regulate their own temperature to a very limited extent, the risk of overheating for the child is much greater than freezing. As a rule, no room has such icy temperatures that the baby is in danger of getting hypothermia. Since the parents sleep in the same room, it would be unbearably cold for you as well. However, protection against overheating is all the more important. Of course, the clothing also depends on the outside temperature, but generally it is sufficient for the baby to wear a body and pyjamas when sleeping. By the way: the baby’s hands may be cool.

This doesn’t indicate that the baby is freezing. But how do I know if my baby is freezing or too cold? There is a simple trick to do this: put a finger in the back of your baby’s neck. If it is warm, everything is fine. Is he sweating? Then you have to take off a layer. If the neck is cool, you should put some clothes on your baby. Pillows or blankets are generally not recommended in the first months of life. There is too great a risk that the baby will pull the blanket or pillow over its face, which can cause suffocation. That is why midwives and paediatricians today advise the use of a baby sleeping bag that is breathable and whose good cut prevents the baby from slipping in. What is the difference between a summer sleeping bag, winter sleeping bag, year-round sleeping bag and a four-season sleeping bag – which sleeping bag is the best for my baby?

Many parents-to-be are unsure which baby sleeping bag to choose for their baby. The season and the home country are decisive for choosing the right baby sleeping bag. If you live in southern countries, it rarely gets really cold. In the north, as in Scandinavia, the climate is often icy in winter. In Germany and neighbouring countries, light to thickly lined sleeping bags with a TOG value of 1.0-2.5 are ideal. The TOG-value indicates the type of wadding or lining and provides information about the degree of warmth of a sleeping bag. A summer sleeping bag has no lining, in winter it is especially thick. The TOG value of 0.5 indicates an unlined sleeping bag, e.g. made of cotton fabric.

It is suitable for temperatures of over 24 degrees at night in the bedroom. The TOG value of 1.0 is found on a baby sleeping bag with a light lining, e.g. terry cloth, and is ideal for temperatures of 18-24 degrees in the bedroom.

Year-round sleeping bags have a TOG value of 2.5 and are therefore suitable for night-time temperatures of 16-21 degrees in the bedroom. Winter sleeping bags have a TOG value of 3.5 and are thickly lined, usually with sleeves and are suitable for room temperatures below 18 degrees. Since you usually need 2 sleeping bags in the beginning (because babies often spit milk and the diaper leaks), we recommend a year-round sleeping bag, also called a four-season sleeping bag. This can be used almost all year round, except in midsummer or in icy cold.

What do I have to pay attention to with my baby sleeping bag? What is important when choosing a sleeping bag?

At first glance, one baby sleeping bag looks like another and initially only differs visually in design. There is a lot to consider in order to choose the right baby sleeping bag and thus to ensure a safe baby sleep and to enjoy the sleeping bag for a long time. The right cut:

The most important thing with the baby sleeping bag is the right proportion of neckline, chest and arm width to prevent the baby from slipping in. Often these are much too wide by default. Make sure that the neck is not constricted but that the head cannot slip in either. The sleeping bag may be tighter at the chest, i.e. keep about 2 cm of air left and right.

The padding:

The right choice of padding is also important. We love cotton, but when it comes to filling, polyester fleece is the better choice. Breathable fleece is antibacterial, does not retain odours and does not clump when washed (as cotton does). Hospitals also choose fleece for the reasons mentioned above. In addition, the sleeping bags dry faster.

Easy care in everyday life:

The baby sleeping bags from nordic coast company can be washed at 40 degrees, can be tumble dried and come out of the wash almost wrinkle-free. An important point, because with baby there is little time for household and you wash much more often than before.

Advantages baby sleeping bag versus baby blanket

A baby sleeping bag gives the baby a slight limit, which usually has a calming effect on babies as it reminds them of the tightness in mum’s tummy. How should I design a safe baby sleeping place? Do I need a baby bed canopy and a nest?

As with adults, fresh air (in any case smoke-free!) is important for a good and healthy sleep. Furthermore, the bedroom should be well ventilated. Even with the window open, you can let your child sleep peacefully, but it is important to make sure that the cot is not in a draught. A canopy made of breathable, light cotton is the best way to protect your child from draughts. It also provides ideal protection from sunlight and mosquitoes and has another positive side effect: in babies’ new, noisy world, it prevents restless looking back and forth. A little heaven soothes the eyes and thus the baby by its limitation. Even later, children love to sleep in a “cave” because they feel safer. It is important for a baby cot nest to have an opening at the top so that the air can circulate. We have also created this chimney effect for the nordic coast canopies.

Crib nest, yes or no?

A controversial point is the bed frame in the cot nest. Some say it gives security, others warn against pulling in the face. The fact that such a bed nest can be pulled into the face at all is usually the result of ignorance about the use and purchase of the right model. Nests calm a baby and its gaze and give the familiar limitation that reminds them of mummy’s tummy. (It is often seen that even babies that are only a few days old slide up to look for the accustomed limitation). Both important factors to help babies fall asleep and to counteract the crying of restless babies who have a lot to process during the day. If a baby bed nest is too thinly padded (approx. 1-2 cm), it will sag quickly and can be pulled down even by small (weak) babies. If the straps are too loose or too long, they can be dangerous. There are clear guidelines in the EU, but not all manufacturers follow them.

Our model therefore differs fundamentally from other models: they are functional, safe and well thought-out. The breathable, stable filling prevents the bed frame from collapsing. Baby sleeping bag size – Which is the right one?

The design of nordic coast company is simple, high-quality and stylish. The quality of the materials is very good, which is especially noticeable after long use. Often one material looks like another at first, fresh from production. Only the really good sleeping bags become softer after the first wash, as with nordic coast company, they do not piddle, keep their shape and can be used with pleasure even by child number two and three.

nordic coast company’s sleeping bags are available in four sizes: 60 cm for newborns from 0-3 months or between 56-62 cm, 70 cm for 3-6 months old babies, 90 cm for 6-18 months old babies and 110 cm for toddlers from 18 months to 36 months. The following size index serves as an illustration:

• 60 cm (size 56/62 cm) = 0 – 3 months
• 70 cm (size 68/74 cm) = 3 – 6 months
• 90 cm (size 80-92 cm) = 6 – 18 months
• 110 cm (size 92-106 cm) = 18 – 36 months

To determine the right baby sleeping bag size, calculate your child’s height minus head 15 cm + 10 cm for romping. Important for sleeping bags: The child should grow out of the sleeping bag, not into it!
Example: Your baby is 56 cm tall. 56 cm – 15 cm + 10 cm = 51 cm. The correct size is then size 60 cm (56/62 cm)

Baby sleeping bag TOG – What is the TOG value for a sleeping bag?

Today midwives recommend that the newborn baby should sleep in a sleeping bag. On the one hand to ensure the optimal sleeping temperature and on the other hand to avoid the danger of suffocation. The ideal sleeping temperature for an infant is around 18 degrees. To prevent the baby from cooling down, the use of a baby sleeping bag with a TOG value of 2.5 is recommended. The TOG value is a measure of the heat resistance of a unit area, which indicates how warm or cold a padding, for example, keeps.

The higher the value, the warmer the baby sleeping bag keeps. With a value of 2.5, sleeping bags are excellently suited for a room temperature of 15-21 degrees and can be used as all-year-round sleeping bags. Besides cooling down, the baby should also not overheat. If it should have more than 24 degrees in the room at night in summer, a lower TOG value should be chosen or, in tropical temperatures of up to 30 degrees in the room, even do without a sleeping bag altogether. Which baby sleeping bag is the right one depends not only on the TOG value.

What do I have to look out for in a baby sleeping bag?

Many other characteristics speak for or against a good model. Apart from the thermal insulation, it is the cut and the material, as well as the workmanship, which should be considered when choosing a sleeping bag. The neckline should give 2 fingers space up to the neck. If it is smaller, the baby is constricted, if it is larger, there is a risk that the baby slips into the sleeping bag. This is especially to be feared in combination with too large armholes and a too large width in the chest. A good sleeping bag has a perfect fit, leaves some air but sits tight in the chest.

This keeps him warm and sits securely. Furthermore, the sleeping bag must not have any seams on the lying surface or loops in the sleeve cut-out. Nordic coast company pays close attention to these requirements during production and has developed a sleeping bag with a perfect fit, which not only fits very well but is also easy to care for. Nordic coast company has of course taken shrinkage into account. The baby sleeping bag is pre-washed and will not shrink. The lining becomes even more cuddly and flexible and reaches its final volume after the third or fourth wash. Ideally the sleeping bag is not only washable at 40 degrees but also suitable for tumble drying without the lining landing at the bottom of the sleeping bag.

What is a baby bed bumper good for?

The changing mat cover is made of 100% cotton. There are nine enchanting designs to choose from in a sporty, classic, nautical, cute or neutral look – depending on the style of the children’s room or furnishings. The changing mat cover is washable at 40 degrees and can be tumble dried. In order to prevent possible shrinkage, we have made the covers extra 2-3 cm larger so that after the first obligatory wash they have the final shape and size. The size of our changing mats is not chosen randomly. With the dimensions 70 x 80 cm we make sure that the changing mat 70×80 fits on every square changing unit.

So you do not have to worry about choosing the right size. Standard sizes for changing chests like 75×85 or 75×80 cm are always a few cm larger, i.e. 2.5 cm left and right, top and bottom. So the changing mat always fits perfectly, because 2.5 cm all around is not noticeable at all. Only if the changing mat is 70×80 larger than its base does it protrude unattractively. The removable towel made of soft terry cloth measures 40 x 60 cm. What should you pay attention to with a changing mat?

Newborn babies are changed up to 8-10 times a day. That’s almost 3,000 diapers per family in the first year and about 6,000 before it dries at an age of usually between two and four years. Therefore the correct equipment of the changing area is very important. Starting with the right nappy-changing unit with small compartments for all the utensils you need for nappy changing (in addition to space for nappies, especially wound cream and wet wipes), finding the right nappy-changing mat is sometimes a big challenge.

We recommend a changing mat with a removable cover that is washable at 40 degrees. To avoid frequent washing, the changing mat cover should be equipped with a waterproof, removable towel. Of course, a conventional terry towel can also be placed over it. However, when the baby pees, urine will drip onto the changing pad cover. The solution is a waterproof terry towel, which can be exchanged for a new one in a few easy steps. Since the baby is often taken in the arms after a mishap, a practical closure, e.g. with Velcro or snap fastener, is ideal, as the changing towel can be changed with one hand. It is important that the towel is wide, as the baby will roll back and forth with its bare bottom during the changing after a few weeks.

The nappy changing unit is available as a set with cover or individually. If you buy both together as a set, you can be sure that the changing mat cover fits perfectly on the changing mat. To make a plastic changing mat more comfortable, you can also buy a cover for the changing mat. Nevertheless, the plastic changing mat usually remains harder than a cloth changing mat and often they rustle unpleasantly and smell of chemicals. It is therefore important to pay attention to where the changing mat is produced and whether it is free of harmful substances. Products from Europe are subject to a strict standard and are usually Oeko Tex Standard 100 certified. Important for the changing mat is the height of the pillow (i.e. the filling). If this is too flat (approx. 1-2 cm) or too soft, the babies can injure themselves if they make sudden movements or throw themselves back. A soft but stable pillow with a height of 4-5 cm significantly reduces this risk.

In any case the cushion filling should also be washable. The most hygienic filling is a filling made of breathable polyester fleece. It does not clump when washed and does not retain odours. Finally, compared to a plastic or fabric changing mat, sustainability is also an important point. Here a cotton changing mat is the clear test winner. In combination with a waterproof terry towel, there is no need for disposable pads from the drugstore. This not only saves money, but also a lot of nappy waste over the 3-4 year average nappy changing time. A nice side effect is that the mostly white disposable pads with coloured edges do not cover the actual changing pad cover. This is an important point for parents who, in addition to functionality, also pay attention to the style in the children’s room.

What size changing mat?

When you think about buying a baby changing mat, you read about different, similar sizes: Size 75x75m, 80×75 cm or 75×80 cm, and sizes like 70×50 cm or the changing mat 50×70 cm. No matter how the measurements are written. The smaller size is usually the height and the larger size is the width. This means that the changing mat is 70 or 75 cm high, or long and 80 or 85 cm wide. Although they are very similar, one wonders: what is the difference and which size to choose? If a changing unit or changing table is already available, the size of the changing mat should be slightly smaller than the changing mat or the space provided for it.

Since in the production of changing mats (and all other textiles) there are always deviations of 1-2 cm, the changing mat with pitch can be a little too large for the changing table. If you buy the changing mat first, however, you limit yourself with the measurements for the changing table. The removable terry towel is 40×60 cm. This makes it big enough to cope with your baby’s rolling movements, because everything that lands on the towel stays there thanks to the waterproof PU coating. Of course, the coating is noiseless. With the help of the four push buttons you can change the towel for a new one in no time. A highlight of the changing mat 50×70 by nordic coast are the small toy sleepers to the left and right of the towel. Your baby is always fidgety and restless during the changing process? Thanks to the loops you can attach your baby’s favourite toy there, which will distract him or her during changing and give him or her something to play with.

The nappy-changing process should also take place in a warm environment. If you want a particularly comfortable nappy-changing area, then a heat lamp or radiant heater is a good choice. However, you should make sure that the radiant heaters are set to the lowest level, as babies can be sensitive. It should be made of soft material and be suitable for sensitive baby and child skin.

Ideally you should think environmentally friendly when buying a changing mat and choose a changing mat with a removable terry towel towel. Of course the changing towel should be absorbent or ideally even waterproof. This means that after a mishap only the towel itself needs to be changed and not the entire changing mat. While the changing mat is in the wash, it would not be ready for use for a certain time.

Changing pad sizes

When purchasing a changing pad, the question often arises as to what size the changing mat should be. The changing mats are available in different and very similar sizes such as 75×75 cm, 80×75 cm or 75×80 cm and sizes such as 70×60 or 60×70 cm. Attention: The smaller size here is always the height and the larger size the width.

Please note that the size of the changing mat should be smaller than the changing mat or the space provided for it. During the production of changing mats (and also other textiles) it can always happen that the actual size differs by 1-2 cm. With bad luck the changing mat is then too large for the changing table.
