Walgreens Celebrates 15 Years of the Expressions Challenge
The Expressions Challenge by Walgreens officially launches on today, January 8 and runs through March 31, 2024.
What started 15 years ago in Chicago to provide roughly 300 high school teenagers a chance to express themselves through art on HIV and AIDS, is now reaching millions of teenagers across all 50 states of the United States — including Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands – and allowing them to express themselves on a variety of issues impacting teens.
As we celebrate our 15th anniversary, we celebrate the thousands of teens who have used the Expressions platform to share what matters to them most as it pertains to challenging issues like mental health awareness, social justice, gender identity and gun violence.
“We looked hard at the ways in which we are already supporting healthy communities, and it made sense to include these important matters in the Expressions Challenge, while supporting young people and their mental wellbeing,” says Alethia Jackson, senior vice president, ESG and Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, Walgreens Boots Alliance.
“Psychologists who have looked at Expressions have touted the therapeutic benefits of self-expression through art, and this evolution of our programs helps us further our purpose to create more joyful lives through better health at all ages.”
Expressions Challenge by Walgreens not only provides teenagers with a platform to express their views on these issues but also recognizes and rewards them for their creativity and courage.
Students can win up to $2,000 by expressing themselves through various categories like Visual Arts, Media Arts, Spoken Word, and Creative Writing.
View the 2023 winning student entries and learn more about the Expressions Challenge at ExpressionsChallenge.com.
The 15th anniversary also comes at a time when Walgreens has increased its commitment to the mental health and wellbeing of teenagers. Recently, Walgreens expanded its long-time collaboration with Mental Health of America (MHA) to target youth during a Back-to-School campaign.
It included a comprehensive set of mental health screening tools and other educational materials available at no cost to schools across the country.
Walgreens will leverage that network so more teens can reap the benefits of entering the Expressions Challenge.
About Expressions by Walgreens
Expressions was established by Walgreens to educate, empower and equip young people and their communities with insights and resources on issues impacting teens.
Since 2009, Expressions by Walgreens has reached approximately one million high school students and awarded more than $400,000 in monetary prizes.
More than 500 organizations, high schools, teachers and parents have participated in the program since its inception.

How to stay healthy for the holidays — Walgreens Boots Alliance
From travel to family dinners, a Walgreens pharmacist shares a few simple steps to protect yourself and your loved ones this season.
‘Tis the season for good food, great company … and plenty of germs. That’s why whether you’re braving the crowded airport or hosting at home this year, health should be at the top of your wish list.
Read on for tips from Dr. Rachel Toothman, Walgreens pharmacist and healthcare supervisor in Cleveland, Ohio, to make sure you’re at your best throughout the holiday season.
Safe travels
Because taking Santa’s sleigh is (sadly) not an option, public transportation is often the only way to get to your destination once December hits.
“That’s why it’s imperative to keep your hands clean by regularly washing and using plenty of sanitizer,” says Toothman. “Remember, hand hygiene is the first line of defense to stay healthy during the holidays.”
Toothman also recommends packing tissues in your carry-on to avoid using shared boxes from public restrooms that might contain bacteria and keeping over-the-counter medication handy.
“Walgreens offers small, travel-friendly containers of everything from acetaminophen to allergy medications,” explains Toothman. “These will keep you moving when you’re on a mission to catch a flight or train.”
To prep before your big travel day, consider immune boosters like the Walgreens-brand Vitamin C supplement. Walgreens-branded vitamins, minerals and supplements provide a host of innovative products, with select products offering the same active ingredients as national brands.
Walgreens pharmacists like Toothman can administer vaccinations to help prepare your body for any upcoming travel or gatherings and provide testing for suspected cases of COVID-19 or flu.
“The No. 1 way to protect yourself and others is to get vaccinated for the respiratory diseases that are most common this time of year, including flu, COVID-19, pneumonia and RSV. This is the best option over any immune booster on the market,” Toothman adds.
Kicking stress to the curb
As we all know, the holidays can be stressful. Many people can feel physical symptoms from the pressure that comes with all the cooking, gift buying and hosting.
“With so many obligations this time of year, it’s often easy to push aside self-care,” Toothman says. “We may be tired and stressed out, but we can’t forget to ask ourselves those little things like, ‘Did I drink enough water today?’ or ‘Have I gotten up and stretched while I’m wrapping all of these gifts?’”
With orders delivered in as little as 1 hour or ready for curbside pickup in 30 minutes, Walgreens makes it easy to order anything from stress support gummies to a weighted blanket and neck massager. That way, you can easily take on whatever challenge arises either before, during or after your celebration.
Healthy hosting habits
There are certain ways to keep yourself and your guests healthy during a big get-together.
“Pay attention to high-touch areas like shared serving spoons,” advises Toothman. “We may think it’s clean because we’re not eating off it, but everybody else’s hands are still touching it. So, after making your plate, it’s a good idea to wash your hands.” Use disinfecting wipes on those surfaces that get touched frequently, including serving ware, door knobs, faucets and cabinets.
It’s also crucial to know everyone’s surroundings ahead of time, and if someone isn’t feeling well, help them cut down on the number of surfaces they touch (by making them a plate for dinner, for example) and have items on hand like face masks and disposable tableware to minimize the spread of germs at gatherings.
Digging in
There’s nothing better than a big holiday dinner—though for many, the hours after the meal may not be as enjoyable.
«For people who already overate, we carry antacids, Pepto-Bismol and anti-diarrheal medications for any kind of digestive issues. On the flip side, if you’re trying to prevent it—if someone knows if they eat certain things, they’re going to have heartburn or an stomach upset—we carry various products such as such as famotidine and Prilosec.”
Walgreens is there for you around the clock
If you or a loved one happens to come down with something—whether it be COVID-19, the flu or a common cold—Walgreens is here to help, with convenient hours on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Day (visit the store locator for hours in your area).
You can also speak to a pharmacist and get over-the-counter recommendations for specific symptoms through free online and in-person consultations.
With professional and at-home testing available, we can help you rule out certain illnesses before you travel and gather with family and friends and narrow down your treatment options.
“We are proud to play a role in ensuring the health and safety of our customers during this special time of year,” says Toothman. “The holiday season might not always be easy, but it’s certainly filled with the same convenience and care that Walgreens offers year-round.”

5 ways Walgreens is making your holiday shopping easier
The most wonderful time of the year is also the most chaotic, and as much as we try, there never seems to be enough time to cross everything off your list.
Searching and shopping are major contributors to holiday anxiety, but with more than 8,700 stores across the U.S., Walgreens offers simple and convenient gift options for people of all ages and stages of life.
«Walgreens is a great one-stop shop for all your holiday needs,» says Dale Johnson, Walgreens group vice president and general merchandise manager of grocery, household and general merchandise.
“Whether you need another string of lights when you’re decorating your tree or you want to give someone you love a gift of a cherished memory, we have you covered.”
Toys, toys and more toys
When you think Walgreens, you may not think toy store, but Johnson says Walgreens is a top destination for the hottest toys and games.
While there’s a host of exclusive toys sold only at Walgreens, you’ll also find popular trendy gifts like the fan-favorite Squishmallows or the nostalgic game classics Battleship and UNO.
“Our No. 1 item in the toy department is UNO. When you’re getting together with family and friends, it’s a great game, no matter your age,” says Johnson.
“Although our toy aisle is smaller than the big-box stores, it is jam-packed with the best toys, most of which are priced under $30.”
Walgreens also carries trading cards for the sports and anime fans in your life. Johnson says he gets Pokémon trading cards as stocking stuffers for his nephews.
He also bought remote-controlled cars to play with his daughter during a Deal of the Week promotion.
“We have a Deal of the Week every week,” he says.
“Typically, it’s life essentials like laundry detergent or toilet paper. But through the holidays, many deals are for great gifts, like the remote-control cars.
These gifts are often up to 60% lower than similar items on the market.”
Personalized photo gifts
Johnson says one of the top things he gives from Walgreens during the holidays is photo gifts, many of which are available for same-day pickup.
Walgreens takes the stress out of holiday cards by letting customers create beautiful, customizable cards without having to design them yourself. Or add personal touches like your own heartfelt message or annual family photo for a memorable holiday greeting.
You can also get creative with a unique photo calendar for the year ahead—a memento to enjoy all 365 days.
“As the largest brick-and-mortar photo retailer in the country, Walgreens does most of the photo production in-store and can complete many orders within one hour,” says Johnson.
“Customers can also order online or in-store for more complex photo projects like mugs and pillows and have the items delivered to the store or home quickly.”
Grab-and-go gifts
Walgreens also makes it easy to find low-cost stocking stuffers and gifts if you’re doing a gift exchange or don’t want to show up empty-handed to a holiday party.
“No matter who you’re shopping for—your kid’s teacher or the postal workers—Walgreens has something for everyone. You can give them small, thoughtful gifts like a $15 gift card to their favorite coffee shop and a monogrammed mug,” he says.
With many grab-and-go gifts conveniently located in the seasonal aisle in the center of the store, customers can easily find great options for a friend, loved one or co-worker in minutes, like warm, fuzzy gloves and slippers, throw blankets or foot massagers. But, Johnson says, customers shouldn’t feel limited to the seasonal aisle.
Johnson says chocolates and candy, cell phone chargers or manicure sets are great, convenient stocking stuffers to pick up. Also, he likes to give Walgreens brand Zinc Cold Therapy tablets and hand sanitizer as stocking stuffers at his house so his loved ones can stay healthy throughout the holiday season.
Walgreens is also a top beauty destination where you can find exclusive brands like No7, Botanics and Soap & Glory. You can also find many popular cosmetics, like the trending e.l.f. Beauty Blush Wand.
Johnson says you can give a loved one the gift of a spa experience at home with facial tools, bath bombs, dissolving shower steamers and candles from Walgreens.
Starting Thursday, Dec. 14, shop the “12 Days of Deals” at Walgreens for daily promotions, product markdowns and loyalty rewards. Visit Walgreens.com for deals galore.
Quick, easy shopping year-round
To make shopping as easy as possible this holiday season, Walgreens offers customers 30-minute Pickup in store, online ordering, 1-hour Delivery and 24-hour Delivery services through delivery partners like DoorDash.
«Our delivery is fast,” he says. “There is a store about a mile and a half from Walgreens corporate office. I’ll place a delivery order, and sometimes it gets there in 15 minutes,» he says.
You can order delivery services online or with the Walgreens app. Deliveries can be made in as little as one hour for orders placed during delivery hours.
All 1-hour deliveries are free on orders of $35 or more. Shoppers can also take advantage of free 1-hour delivery on orders $20+ from Dec. 15 to 17, Dec. 24 to 25 and Dec. 31 to Jan. 1.
Convenient holiday shopping hours
In addition to our digital services, Walgreens makes shopping in store a breeze.
Walgreens stores will be open during regular business hours throughout the holiday season, with abbreviated store hours on Christmas Day. Stores will also be open during regular business hours on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. 24-hour locations will remain open throughout the holiday season.
With a range of flexible fulfillment options, Walgreens makes it quick, easy and convenient to check those final holiday items off your list—even if you’re on a tight schedule.
«We’re so conveniently located throughout the country—78% of all Americans live within five miles of a Walgreens,» Johnson says. “When shoppers think of Walgreens, we’re often people’s first stop when they need help to feel better, but we’re also a great place for filling any of your holiday needs—gifts, ornaments, food, beverages and more.”
AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy One of Four Specialty Pharmacies Selected to Distribute XDEMVY®
AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy, one of the largest specialty and home delivery pharmacies in the U.S. and a subsidiary of Walgreens, is one of four specialty pharmacies selected to distribute XDEMVY® (lotilaner ophthalmic solution) 0.25%.
Manufactured by Tarsus Pharmaceuticals, XDEMVY is the first and only FDA approved treatment for Demodex blepharitis (DB), a highly prevalent eyelid disease impacting 25 million eye care patients in the U.S. The addition of XDEMVY brings the specialty pharmacy’s number of LDDs to over 240, among the highest of specialty pharmacies in the U.S.
Demodex blepharitis is caused by an infestation of Demodex mites, the most common ectoparasites found on human skin.
Patients can easily overlook symptoms of Demodex blepharitis due to similarities with other eye conditions like dry eye or allergies. When left untreated, Demodex blepharitis can have clinical manifestations like inflammation of the lid and conjunctiva, and corneal manifestations.
“We are excited Tarsus selected us as part of this network to offer this sought after medication for our patients. Winning access to a limited distribution drug is all about the way we take care of patients, how we support providers, and what services we wrap around our patients and therapies,” says Tracey James, RPh, chief operating officer of Walgreens enterprise specialty.
“Our patients not only deserve access to these medications, but also the personalized support of our Specialty360 Therapy Teams to help them throughout their treatment.”
Janice Havlik, RPh, Specialty360 therapy director for endocrine, organ and infectious diseases, says specialty pharmacists play an integral role in helping patients initiate their therapy.
“As with any of our medications, our pharmacists are available to educate our patients on their particular treatment, help them understand what to expect, and are available 24/7 to answer any questions or concerns they may have,” she says.
Walgreens Launches Rx Savings Finder to Help Patients Save on Prescription Medications
New tool consolidates discount cards, offering easy access to savings on thousands of prescription medications for Walgreens customers.
Walgreens today announced the launch of its new Rx Savings Finder, a simple-to-use digital tool designed to help customers save money on prescription medications. Rx Savings Finder finds free, third-party discount cards, providing patients with a quick and easy way to find lower prices on their Walgreens medications.
“Inflation not only impacts our pockets but can have serious implications on health,” said Rick Gates, chief pharmacy officer, Walgreens. “Over one-third of Americans have avoided a prescription refill to reduce costs and with over 131 million Americans taking at least one prescription medication, this is very concerning. That is why we have launched Walgreens Rx Savings Finder – to empower our customers with transparent prescription costs and help them save money on medications.”
The Walgreens Rx Savings Finder tool helps to alleviate cost concerns for patients by offering savings on thousands of medications as well as providing transparent pricing before they reach the checkout counter. Available online at Walgreens.RxSense.com, the tool is available to all Walgreens customers for free, with no monthly subscription or yearly membership needed.
The Walgreens Rx Savings Finder tool is available to all Walgreens customers at no cost. Patients can access the discount card prices by text message or email, which can be presented to a Walgreens pharmacy team member so the savings can be applied to the price of their prescription medications. With Rx Savings Finder, customers can feel confident they are making informed decisions at the pharmacy counter for themselves and their families.
By consolidating the search process across multiple discount card websites, Walgreens not only saves our patients valuable time and reduces the cost of vital medications, but also takes an important step in alleviating the workload of our pharmacists.
«At Walgreens, we are committed to empowering customers to find lower deals at Walgreens while unlocking the full potential of our pharmacists.
The response to our pilot program has been overwhelmingly positive, with both customers and our dedicated pharmacy staff reporting significant time and cost savings.
One striking instance involves a pharmacist’s recent account where our Rx Savings Finder tool helped a customer save over $75 on their prescriptions during a single visit,” said Rick Gates.
“This tool is just one facet of our evolving suite of pharmacy solutions. Our digital innovations, spanning telepharmacy, micro-fulfillment, and cutting-edge technologies, align with the evolving needs of patients and pharmacists. Beyond the conventional role of medication dispensing, our vision encompasses fostering meaningful patient connections, looking at their holistic health profiles, and collaborating with healthcare partners for a more comprehensive and community-centric approach to healthcare.”
Rx Savings Finder is now available at Walgreens pharmacies nationwide. For more information on the Walgreens Rx Savings Finder tool and how it can help you save on your prescription medications, please visit Walgreens.

“Walgreens is a very popular holiday card destination, and the major reasons are because our value, selection, quality and convenience just cannot be beat,” Calhoun says.
With thousands of different card template designs, multiple paper types and import options direct from your phone or computer, Google Photo, Facebook or Instagram, it’s easy to see the appeal.
“In recent years, there has been a clear shift in customers wanting to invest a little more to make their cards stand out with our premium products and features,” he adds.
Calhoun suggests premium picks such as stylish trim for seasonal cards, foil cards that sparkle and shine, or magnet cards that command a special spot on the fridge and can serve as a long-lasting keepsake.
“For convenience, we also have our Mail-for-Me program, which is just as it sounds,” Calhoun says.
“You create the design, then we print, add postage and mail the photo cards to your provided address list. If you prefer to personally address your cards, most are available for same-day pickup or can be sent to your door with Express Local Delivery.”
Walgreens Stores to Close for Thanksgiving Holiday
On Thanksgiving Day, most Walgreens locations will be closed. Nearly all 700 Walgreens 24-hour locations will remain open on Thanksgiving to help meet the healthcare needs of our customers. This is the first time Walgreens has closed stores on Thanksgiving Day to give time back to its workforce.
“We have consistently heard from our team members—who are the face of Walgreens—that time off is a meaningful way for us to demonstrate we value them,” said Tracey D. Brown, EVP, President Walgreens Retail & Chief Customer Officer.
“We heard them, are committed to listening to their feedback and are dedicated to doing what is right for them.
We hope they can enjoy the holiday and spend time with their loved ones.”
Walgreens team members scheduled to work on Thanksgiving at 24-hour locations are essential in delivering care to their communities and serve as a critical destination for healthcare services, including prescription access, pharmacist advice and medication management.
We are grateful to them for continuing to care for our customers on this holiday.
During respiratory illness season, Walgreens pharmacy team members are especially critical to communities by providing patients with life-saving vaccines, COVID-19 and flu testing, health screenings and needed medications—in some instances even serving as a primary point of care for individuals who have limited access to other healthcare professionals and services.
“We know that this season comes with immense pressures to provide the highest level of healthcare and service from our pharmacies.
Our change in operations this year is intended to acknowledge the dedication of our store team members and leadership, pharmacists and pharmacy techs who are working incredibly hard to deliver great customer and patient care.
We’re grateful for all they do each day,” Brown said.
A small number of Walgreens distribution centers and other sites will also continue to operate on Thanksgiving Day, including supply chain and centralized teams.
These team members play an essential role in the company’s readiness to deliver healthcare and convenience for customers and patients leading up to Thanksgiving and through the holiday weekend.
